5th Grade Science
Year at a Glance
In 5th Grade, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: Watery Planet, Stars & the Solar System; Web of Life and Chemical Magic. These concepts can be explored at anytime during the school year and are recommended to be used when appropriate as enhancements to your ReadyGen literacy resources. We hope these science connections help bring those standards to life.
Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
Develop models to describe the ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
Using data and graphs to describe the amounts and percentages of saltwater and freshwater in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
Obtain information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
Earth Science - Watery Planet
Understand that the Earth and sun provide many renewable and nonrenewable resources; recognize that Earth’s surface changes constantly; understand how the uneven heating of Earth’s surface (by the sun) affects weather.
ReadyGen Connections
Unit 1 Night of the Spadefoot Toads Sleuth: “Fishy Business!”; “Welcome to the Neighborhood?”
(5-ESS3-1: Protecting Earth's Resources and Environment)
Unit 3 George’s Secret to the Universe Sleuth: “Technology and Treasure”
(5-ESS2-1: Earth Sphere Interactions)
Mystery Science 5th Grade Student Notebook
Earth Science - Spaceship Earth
Understand that the Earth and sun provide many renewable and nonrenewable resources; recognize that Earth’s surface changes constantly; understand how the uneven heating of Earth’s surface (by the sun) affects weather.
ReadyGen Connections
Unit 3 George’s Secret Key to the Universe The Man Who Went to the Far Side of the Moon Mayday on Moon of Jupiter Jess and Layla’s Astronomical Assignment Our Mysterious Universe A Black Hole is NOT a Hole Sleuth: “Careers in the Space Industry”; “Charlotte’s Space Travel”; “Moving to Mars”
(5-ESS1-1: Stellar Brightness and Distance) (5-ESS1-2: Daily and Seasonal Sky Change)

From the moment you ask where, why, and how? You are a scientist!
It is always a good reminder for both students and teachers, that we are all scientist! Below are some resources to share with your students about what a scientist looks like, what a scientist does and the importance of contributing to the world's collective science knowledge. The world needs science, and science needs YOU!
