My Grading PROCEDURES & POLICIES
I don't give grades – they are earned.
Assignments are due when they are due. It is each student's responsibility to complete their work on time and to their best ability.
Homework is assigned in order to further your understanding of the topics we cover and to reinforce material learned in class. In order for homework to be collected it must be:
Completed on time and your own work, done to the best of your ability.
If you miss school, it is your responsibility to obtain any assignments that you were absent for and to complete the assignment for the next day’s class.
Homework is your pathway to preparing for assessments. Assessments will be frequent and based off of the homework completed.
If you miss a lab, quiz, or test it is your responsibility to contact me immediately so that we can schedule a time for you to make up what you missed. You have one week from the day you return to class to make up anything that you missed.
**** The New York State Education Department requires students to “have successfully completed 1200 minutes of laboratory experience with satisfactory written reports for each laboratory investigation” before they are eligible for the Regents exam. In order to fulfill this requirement, all labs must be completed and will be kept on file. You should have 1200 lab minutes completed before the end of May. Satisfactory completion is recorded with a grade >65%)
▪ DO NOT GET BEHIND ON YOUR LABS! Failure to complete the 1200-minute (~30 labs) requirement will result in you not sitting for the Regents exam.
▪ You must earn a passing grade on all lab write-ups for them to qualify for the lab requirement. If you fail a lab, you will be required to redo the write-up until it is satisfactory, however, you will receive the initial grade.
Your grade in this class will be based upon your performance on:
Unit tests (30%)
Quizzes (25%)
Weekly quizzes will be given throughout each unit (usually on Fridays). If you are absent on the day of a quiz, you will be expected to take the test on the day of your return.
Classwork (15%)
Laboratory reports/write-ups (30%)
Chemistry is not a science that you can learn by simply memorizing vocabulary. In order to fully understand many Chemistry concepts, you need to practice the math and problem solving associated with these ideas, therefore, you can expect regular homework assignments that challenge and reinforce what we are covering in class
You can view your grades on the Student Portal anytime. Please check your grades regularly to make certain that I have received all your assignments. If you have a question about a grade, email me or stop in with your inquiries.
Regents Exam
The New York State Regents Exam will be given during Regents week in June. Only those students who have met the lab requirements for Regents Chemistry will be allowed to take the exam. You will be supplied with a Regents Review Book in May and we will be doing practice exam questions throughout the year. Regents review sessions will be held during June and you are strongly encouraged to attend those sessions.
