The castle and the Visconti family
The Visconti were one of the most important Italian noble families. They ruled over Northern Italy from 1277 to 1447.
The castle was built as a defensive fortress and then became their residence.
In 1473 the two brothers, Francesco and Guido, decided to divide their properties; Francesco took the new part of the castle, Guido, the ancient one. Now, we can see three different parts in the castle; the second part, “The summer castle”, is open to visitors.
