The M&M (Music Mentor) Program provides an opportunity for orchestra students in grades 7-12 to mentor a beginning fifth grade orchestra student. Students sign up to be a mentor in October and the mentor sessions happen during the month of November. Each fifth grade student is paired with a mentor for three 20 minute sessions. Mentors help them with beginning set up, note reading, weekly lesson assignments, and beginning sound production with the bow. Mentors in grades 9-12 are eligible to receive service learning credit for the time that they volunteer with the program. The experience requires the mentors to keep a basic mentor reflection journal each week and it culminates with a mentor celebration event which includes pizza, board games and of course. . . M&Ms!
