Reading (UFLI for Phonics; Wonders is the curriculum used in the homeroom classrooms. I will try to use it when possible during Reading Lab.)
Phonemic Awareness and Phonics are the primary focuses in K-2. Depending on need, grades 3-4 will also continue to study phonics and morphology.
Vocabulary is an important piece of reading instruction. A strong vocabulary contributes to strong comprehension skills, so we will also devote time each week to vocabulary development
Comprehension is one of the main goals of reading. The comprehension piece will be added as we talk about stories and practice our phonics and vocabulary skills.
Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) assessments will be used to guide the instruction in our reading classroom. This timed assessment checks accuracy, speed, and comprehension of reading aloud.
Accelerated Reading and STAR Tests to assess reading levels and comprehension
Spelling (Wonders)
When possible, I review the students' spelling list from their classroom teacher.
We also apply our phonics rules to our spelling.
Language (Wonders)
Grammar and writing skills--These are not our focus during Reading Lab, but they are reinforced whenever possible during our time together.
Math (Illustrative Math)
During Math Lab, we work on skills provided by the classroom teacher. We do the same work that the whole class is doing, but we get to do it in a small-group setting. This allows for good discussions, questions, and immediate feedback.
