On Tuesday 27th June, we put on our house t-shirts and our trainers for our last ever sport's day. Following tradition, we completed a sprint race and then the all-time favourite novelty, house race: the scarecrow race. We hope it was a memorable day for our year 6's - well done!
Ready, set, GO!
On Thursday 22nd June, year six went to the Chelmsford Museum where we were able to travel through to different time periods to see artefacts and trends of the time. We also had a session based on WWII which helped strengthen our understanding in our history lessons. We took part in rationing where we had to do our weekly shop and plan meals accordingly. To help us understand life during the Blitz, we were able to go inside an air raid shelter and try on a replica gas mask. Amongst this, there were also real artefacts from WWII which we could touch and handle, such as clothes, a piece of aircraft and even a gas bomb! We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and were also lucky enough for a picnic lunch in the sun.
Within our maths lessons, we have applied our co-ordinate and geometry skills to create eye-catching curves of pursuit. We investigated how when straight lines intersect they can create curved lines. We planned our designs on paper before moving them onto paper with a needle and thread.
Coronation Celebrations!
To commemorate King Charles III coronation, we had a celebratory picnic lunch, made our own crowns from recycled or natural materials and painted a pebble linked to this theme. We really hope this is a day that the children remember when they are older.
In French this term, we have been learning the words for clothing. We have used them to express our likes and dislikes and explained our reasons. We have also added adverbs to explain when we wear our favourite outfits. We put all this learning into our Powerpoint slides. Here are some of them
EAL asssembly
On Tuesday 21st March, some year 6 pupils who have English as an additional language, spoke to the whole school about their native tongue or culture. They delivered this assembly with confidence and educated the rest of the school (and staff) about their hertiage. Well done to you all - you did amazing!
Within the library, clues were left for us to decide which character had come for dinner.
Some clues left us very stumped!
From these pictures, can you guess who any of the book character guests were?
This term, within our science lessons, we are studying electricity. We kickstarted this unit by looking at the scientist, Nikola Tesla. We produced some fantastic information texts all about him and we were amazed to find out that the infamous car brand, Tesla, is named after him.
In addition, we have been learning about circuits and using scientific drawings to represent circuits. We made predictions as to whether the bulb would light within the circuit and gave reasonings for this. After, we tested our predictions out using an online circuit builder.
Have a go at home to see what you can create. Can the bulb light if there is a hand within the circuit?
SATs
With the SATs looming in May, we thought we would just put a copy of our SATs presentation we did to parents on our website. To access this for information, please click the button on the right. Please see the timetable below too. Please note, Monday 8th May 2023 is a bank holiday.
Tuesday 9 May 2023: English grammar, punctuation and spelling papers 1 and 2
Wednesday 10 May 2023: English reading
Thursday 11 May 2023: Mathematics papers 1 and 2
Friday 12 May 2023: Mathematics paper 3
During our maths enrichment morning, year 5 and 6 were tasked with making a Rube Goldberg machine (a machine which carries out a task without human interaction). Year 6 applied their mathematical problem solving skills in order to meet the outcome of popping a balloon. We had lots of fun and created a mess in our classrooms! Please see the winners of each class below:
The Christmas Chart Show
Well that's a wrap for the Christmas productions and we are so proud of our classes for the wonderful singing and fantastic acting. Well done and thank you year 6 for putting on a superb show - Merry Christmas everybody!
On a cold, frosty Friday afternoon, year 6 took part in a bootcamp session led by an outside agency. We were put through our paces, running with tyres and heaving rope. The outcome of this session was to communicate effectively, support our peers and exercise our bodies. Despite being covered in mud, we had a fantastic time (well most of us…)
In science, we have been learning about classification, adaptation and evolution. We recapped the different types of animal groups there are and looked at animals which are classified into each group. From this, we created our own branching keys to help classify animals. Have a look through some of the examples below.
We also conducted an experiment to help explore the process of adaptation. We learnt about the different types of beaks finches were discovered to have on the Galapagos islands and decided to investigate how fit for purpose different beaks were. To imitate the beaks, we used tweezers, clothes pegs, flat stones, pencils and spoons. We predicted which 'beaks' we thought we would best to pick up the different types of food then tested out our predictions.

This term Year 6 produced some amazing posters giving French people information about our school. Here are some of them. We used a lot of knowledge built up over our time at Sunnymede - masculine and feminine nouns needing matching adjectives, different articles le/la & un/une and French words for colours. We also used our new vocabulary from this term - places in school, different sentence starters as well as new adjectives that we found in bilingual dictionaries.

In art, we have been creating sculptures in the style of Ancient Greek athletes. Firstly, we drew the human body, considering proportion, and then we used wire and plaster to make the sculptures. Using the plaster was quite messy work but we managed to smooth the plaster in order to make our sculpture stable. Some of us were able to make our athlete stand freely!
Welcome back to a new year and we are excited to begin our final journey of Sunnymede Junior School! So far, we have settled well into some new routines and have began our learning in some of our units: Ancient Greece, poetry and place value. As you can imagine, we are super excited for our residential trip to Hilltop to challenge ourselves, build new relationships and overcome fears. We are looking forward to what the upcoming year and cannot wait to see the hard work produced.
