Trip to Norsey Woods
After studying plants in science, we thought it would be a good idea to take a trip to Norsey Woods to look at the plants there. We found lots of interesting trees, plants and flowers. We discussed why plants did not grow in certain areas and why some flourished in other places. On our walk, we found many other unusual things.
Thank you to all of the mums and helpers who came with us, without your support these visits would not go ahead.
National Gallery Visit
On the 29th June, Year 3 visited the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. The day started off a little bit soggy, but by the time we had travelled along the train lines, we were greeted with bright sunshine in London. We had an amazing day; walking through Leicester Square, gazing at the lanterns in China Town, walking around Trafalgar Square, riding the underground and appreciating the fantastic artwork in the National Gallery. Thank you so much to all the parents who helped make this day happen. One of our year 3's said it was the best trip they had ever been on, but their feet hurt at the end of the day!!!!
And finally.......we made our way home!!
Exhausted but glad we had a really nice day.
Hooray for sports day!
Well done Year 3! You had a really successful first sports day in the Juniors....especially Pilgrim House.
12th June
Today we started a new topic in maths; Angles, with lots of new mathematical vocabulary such as quarter turn, half turn, clockwise and anticlockwise.
We then made instructions for our partner to follow. I think most of us ended up where we should have gone!!
5th June
The Science results are in.......some of use were surprised at what we found out
This seed had no water but lots of sunshine.
These seeds had water but grew in the dark. The leaves were very yellowy and curled up. The stems were very pale, almost white. They also grew very long because they were searching for the sunlight.
The seeds that had water, soil, sunlight and warmth grew the best.
We planted the good seeds in a tub.
Hopefully we will get some new beans before the end of the summer term and see the life cycle of the runner bean.
25th May 2023
In Design and Technology, we have been designing and making our own wooden picture frame. The sawing was very tricky and some children found it very challenging. Others struggled to measure accurately. But everyone created a beautiful picture frame with feet so it is free-standing.
18th May
Today, we planted some runner bean seeds. But we turned it into a scientific experiment to see what seeds need to grow healthily. In our groups, we planted two seeds. One of the seeds we will give light, warmth, water and sun. The other seed we will take one of those things away and see how it affects the growth of our seed. Watch this space for our results!
3rd May
On Wednesday morning, Year 3 took a historical trip to Billericay High Street. In class, we are learning about Billericay in the past and looking at why specific changes have taken place. We are also close to learning about the Mayflower Ship and the significance of our school house names. Our children were time detectives and enjoyed the challenge of finding dates on the sides of buildings. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to help walk with us. Here are some pictures of 'History in the High Street'. Can your child tell you anything we learnt?
28th April
Today, 3H took a long walk to St Peter's Primary school and took part in a Zumba class as part of Active Essex. All of the children had a great afternoon, one children said "It was a lot of walking but it was worth it because it was a lot of fun." Thank you to the parents who helped us by walking with the children.

20th April
In Science this term, we are learning about plants. We had lots of fun this week dissecting flowers and finding the different parts. Not just petals, stem, leaves and roots. But learning about the anther, the stamen, the style, the filament, the sepal and the ovary. We also learnt about the importance of these parts of the flower.
17th - 21st April
This week, the year 3 have been studying the poem 'The Sound Collector' by Roget McGough. Inspired by the poem, we collected sounds from around our school and wrote them into a poem, just like 'The Sound Collector'. Can you see our rhyming words and repetition? Can you feel the rhythm of the poem
We listened for sounds in the hall.
We listened for sounds in the playground.
We listened for sounds in upper school, but it was very quiet as they were al working so hard!
31st March
In French this term, we learnt how to write the date and we talked about our birthdays. We really enjoyed the song "Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire?". Here are some of the party invitations we designed using some "I can" ("Je peux") phrases.
16th March
Today, Year 3 visited Colchester Castle. We had an amazing day and all the children learnt new things, whilst consolidating what we have already learnt in school. Have a look at our pictures to see what we got up to. Thank you to all the parents who helped us on the school trip, we couldn't do it without you!
The guides taught us lots of interesting facts about the Celts and the Romans. We had to go into the vaults of the castle and count 100 years for every step we went down.
In the Round House we found out how the Romans crushed the wheat and weaved with wool.
We found a Roman Mosaic and Roman decorations.
Don't panic!
There are lots of Roman Soldiers here to protect us!
3P outside Colchester Castle.
We worked as a team to build a Roman Villa and a round house.
3rd March
In our art lessons, we have been learning about mosaics. We compared Roman mosaics with the more modern Gaudi mosaics, then manipulated and rolled clay to create our own mosaic tile. When they were dry, we used our brush stroke skills from last term and painted our tiles. What do you think?
WORLD BOOK DAY
2nd March
We had a really fun day today for World Book Day. Everyone looked amazing! We worked together to find out which book characters came to dinner and made mosaic designs of our favourite book character. Can you tell what they are?
26th February
Well done to the children in 3P for participating in their first Junior School Class Assembly. They showed us their non-chronological reports about animals, facts about Italy, demonstrated some yoga poses and treated us to their accompaniment on the glockenspiel to 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley. They all spoke clearly and showed positivity and growth mindset. Well done 3P.
27th January
Well done to the children in 3H for participating in their first Junior School Class Assembly. They treated us to a brilliant recital of the poem 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat' by Edward Lear, then read us their own amazing versions of the poem. They showed us their imitations of portraits by Sonja and Robert Delaunay and showed us their musical skills on the glockenspiels. Thank you 3H!
13th January
This week, we have also been busy painting. We learnt about skills in painting; looking at different brush strokes, how to make secondary colours and how to create different tones of colour. We then studied different paintings by Robert and Sonja Delaunay and tried to recreate our own versions of their paintings. What do you think?

20th November
Last week, year 3 developed their weaving skills. First, we revised weaving with paper.
Then we made a weaving frame or a loom.
Warps go from the top to the bottom.
After that, we weaved a tree trunk.
Wefts go from the left to the right.
Some of us weaved snowmen.
Some of use weaved Christmas Trees.
We decorated our snowmen with paper.
We decorated our trees with beads.
We could choose the colour of the wool for our Christmas Trees.
It was quite challenging doing our weaving. We really had to concentrate, show great determination and perseverance and ask for help from adults and friends. Well done year 3, we saw some amazing teamwork in our classrooms last week.
10th November
Do you know how to use a compass? Year 3 do!
That was our skill to learn today. We had planned to go outside and direct our friends around the playground but the torrential rain meant we had to direct our friends around the year 3 area instead. We have been learning which continent, country , county and town we live in and we have studied the human and physical features of the United Kingdom.
2nd November
Today, 3P went to The Billericay School to take part in a dance workshop. After our long walk in the morning, we warmed up with a musical statues style game. We were then put into groups and the year 9 and 10 students taught us a dance sequence. The children's behaviour was excellent and everyone had a really fun time. We all got stickers for our determination and great attitude. Here are some of our dance poses.
In our first term learning French, we have learnt how to say colours. We used them to colour in pictures of "Deux Petits Oiseaux" (Two Little Dickie Birds) reading the French words so that we coloured in each section using the correct colour.

We hope you have all had a restful half term break and have recharged your batteries.
Can you believe we have already completed a whole half term in the Juniors? Well done year 3!
HOMEWORK REMINDER
This is to remind you, homework starts for year 3 this half term.
Homework is given out every Friday and needs to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. The children are still expected to read daily, practice their times tables and visit Times Tables Rock Stars. Children who complete their homework every week are entered into the homework raffle at the end of each term. If your child is unable to complete their homework, Mrs Houghton holds a homework club every Tuesday lunch time.
20th October 2022
We have been busy making pop-up cards in our Design Technology lessons. At first, it was a little bit tricky and we had to listen and follow instructions carefully. Our cards look amazing. What do you think?
Some children were so inspired, they went home and researched pop-up cards independently!
20th September 2022

STONE AGE DAY
Today, year 3 had an amazing day with Gary the Stone Age man. You all looked amazing in your outfits; thank you to all the parents and carers who made their children so authentic! Gary taught us many facts from the Stone Age and showed us lots of artefacts. He showed us how the Stone Age hunters caught Woolly Mammoths and gathered nuts and berries. He demonstrated how the Stone Age people might have brought the huge stones to Stonehenge and we tried to build our own versions of Stonehenge. We had so much fun, thank you Gary and well done year 3 on your excellent behaviour.
