June 2023
On Thursday 8th June, the sun shone as year 5 travelled to London by train.
In the morning, we visited The Bank of England Museum as part of our PSHE unit on economic well-being. The children learnt about the history of the bank, the roles of women, forgery, trading and the links between slavery and the bank. There were lots to keep the children amused. Some children tried to keep inflation at 2%; the adults didn’t like it when it rolled to 10%! We even got to pick up a real gold bar, which weighed 12kg!
In the afternoon, we explored St.Paul’s Cathedral and The architect Sir Christopher Wren. Most of us climbed the 528 steps to see the magnificent views of London from the top of the dome.

The children had an amazing day, celebrating the King's Coronation. They all looked amazing in their celebratory crowns, which were inspired by the king's love of nature and his passion for protecting the environment.
We learnt all about the Coronation and the Role of the King. The children wrote their own poems based on If I were a King by AA Milne.
In art, we also painted stones for our wildlife area.
In science, we made our own thaumatropes - a toy which was popular in the 19th Century. The two images on opposite sides of the card, appear to merge, when the straw is rotated.
Did you know that the King was highlighting plastic pollution as early as 1970? He has an organic garden at Highgrove House.
To reduce his carbon footprint, he has had his Aston Martin converted to run on bioethanol (made from wine and cheese!). He is a campaigner, promotoing the use of wool in the fashion industry and for interiors (fabric for cushions sofas etc) as it is biodegradable. Also, businesses who want a Royal warrant, need to follow strict environmental rules.
We all enjoyed our picnic lunch. The cake was delicious.
April 2023
We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half-term. ; we're really looking forward to having the children back on Monday 17th April. We have an exciting, jam-packed summer term. Our text in English this term is 'The Boy in the Tower' by Polly Yo-Hen. Watch out for the Bluchers! In history, we will be learning about the life and times of the Ancient Mayas. In science, we will be learning about the sexual and asexual reproduction of plants and the lifecycles of animals. In computing, we will writing our own podccasts!

April 2023
In French this term, we used dictionaries to find adjectives to describe our school. At the end of the unit we pronounced them correctly in our Powerpoint presentations. We had fun being presenters!
Don't forget Parent Consultations are on Tuesday 28th March and Thursday 30th March!
Kind regards
Mrs Mussenden, Mrs Hathaway and Mrs Bicheno
To launch our topic of space, we made stomp rockets to investigate air resistence. We changed different variables such as the nose cone, size of bottle and number of fins.
On Thursday 9th March, we travelled to the Baptist Church for 'Life Expo', investigating the life and teachings of Jesus. The children really enjoyed the interactive exhibition.
In PE, we have been developing our attacking and defending skills in handball, such as throwing, catching, dribbling, intercepting and shooting. We also tested our reaction time.
In PSHE, we practised our first aid skills that we learnt in year 4. We learnt how to stay calm in an emergency.
In design and technology, we tasted and evaluated biscuits before conducting a survey. Inspired by The Apprentice, we then designed cookies with a particular theme. Can you tell what our theme is?
Investigating the mystery dinner guests!

#SaferInternetDay
To celebrate Safer Internet Day, we enjoyed a range of fun activities to raise awareness of online issues and current concerns.
February 2023
As we have been learning about the environmental impact of deforestation and the use of plastic, we decided to get creative with our homework! The children worked really hard, producing some artistic and practical crafts!
This term, we will start by reading and analysing poems by Benjamin Zephania and using this to wrie our own performance poems. In geography, we will be looking at rainforests and the environmental impact of deforestation. In science, we will be looking at the characteristics of materials, including reversible and irreversible changes.

On Thursday 17th November, Year 5 took part in their very own Viking day! The children and staff came in dressed up as if they were from the Viking period. We spent the morning learning about what life would have been like as a Viking and were able to hold ancient artefacts, including kitchen utensils made from wood and animal antlers. We took part in a game, which was similar to draughts. This involved tactical thinking and strategic planning for the geese to catch the fox! During the afternoon, we translated old English words and phrases into modern day English and witnessed how coins were made. We had such an memorable day!
The children have been getting creative in art and have been painting portraits inspired by Kate Spencer and Romero Britto. In computing, they have have been learning how to keep safe and have enjoyed creating their own maze games. In English, they have been writing character descriptions of the witches and Macbeth in preparation of writing their own playscripts. In maths, they are exploring multiples, factors and prime numbers.
Hope you all have an enjoyable week off with your families. Don't forget 5M's class assembly is on Friday 4th November 2022 and 5HB's is on Friday 11th November. We also have Viking Day on Thursday 17th November 2022.
Kind regards

This term, to inspire us to practice conjugating French verbs, we watched a video of the New Zealand rugby team performing a Hakka before a big match. We then performed our own versions of a Hakka while conjugating the French verb aimer (to like). Don't we look fierce?!
In computing, we have been using Scratch to create our own maze games. Some of us included bonuses, obstructions and different levels.
In PSHE, we found out that by working collaboratively, we could build the tallest towers using newspaper.
As scientists, we have been investigating the science behind the different types of forces around us, including: air resistance, gravity and friction. We carried out a range of experiments, developing our investigative skills.
We also investigated the link between mass and weight, using a Newton Metre.
We investigated our shoes to see which had the most grip and therefore created the most friction and bigger force on the Newton meter.
We were finding out the best size for a parachute.
Some of us tested different materials.
Welcome back to the start of a new school year. The children have settled in well to upper school and are working hard. They are already beginning to demonstrate good independence skills and responsibility. In English, they have been enjoying writing their own witches spell based on the one in MacBeth. In maths, they are developing their place value knowledge, exploring numbers up to 100,000. In science, they have been carrying out experiments, learning about forces.
'If you were unable to attend the ''Meet the Teacher' meeting, you can click on the link above to keep updated. Keep checking this page regularly to see some of the wonderful work that your children are doing.
Don't forget P.E. is every Tuesday and Wednesday!
