Juniors
Junior Year Checklist
1. Focus on your grades & take challenging classes. Colleges put a lot of focus on your junior year grades & the classes you choose to take.
2. Think about what you want to study in college and take career & interest assessments on collegeforTN.org.
3. Register for the October PSAT exam by visiting the GHS Counseling Office.
4. Check in regularly with your school counselor and teachers for guidance on college.
5. Begin going on campus visits & meet with admissions staff. If you interview with an admissions office, send thank you notes after your interview.
6. Register for & take the ACT and/or SAT. Tennessee offers the ACT for all HS juniors during the spring semester.
7. Practice writing. Nearly every class in college will require you to write including physical education classes!
8. Think about what teachers you would like to write your letters of recommendation.
9. Consider how you will pay for college. Research the scholarship database for juniors this year!
10. Get involved in extracurricular activities. Hold a leadership role, volunteer, pursue a hobby, work part-time. Colleges like to see that you have interests you are pursuing.
11. Create a resume or portfolio of your activities & accomplishments. This will help you complete college & scholarship applications next year. It will also help the teachers when writing your letters of recommendation.
