Take Challenging Classes. Colleges want to see you can handle rigorous courses. They help you improve your writing, problem-solving, time management, good discipline, and study habits. 

Take Good Notes. Stick to the main points. Don't try to write every word. Pay attention to the teacher's cues for what is important. Use outlines and bullet points. If you miss a point, leave a space to fill in after you find the missing information. Organize your notes by recording the date, class, and topic at the top of the page. Number your pages of notes each day.

Grades MATTER. Your high school grade point average (GPA) starts now. College scholarships are often based on GPA, so the better the grades, the higher the scholarships may be. Seek help from your teacher or from tutoring if you are struggling.

Extracurricular Activities. Show you are well-rounded by getting involved in sports, clubs, volunteer work, etc. It is important to be active and take leadership roles in areas you enjoy rather than being a member of everything.

Start a Resume. Document your activities, accomplishments, athletics, awards, leadership, etc.

Explore College & Career Interests. Attend a college fair. Make time to research career interests or job shadow. 

Meet your school counselor. Your school counselor can be a great advocate for you as you navigate high school.

Select Classes for Next Year. Meet with your counselor to select appropriate classes for 10th grade.
