What Does a Student Assistant Do?
Student Assistants work with both the Makerspace Facilitator and the Technology Coordinator, serving an important role in supporting the schoolโs Makerspace and student-run technology helpdesk.

Student Assistants are an essential part of the day-to-day operation of the schoolโs Makerspace. They help ensure that the Makerspace runs smoothly and is a safe, productive, and welcoming environment for students and staff. Under the guidance of the Makerspace Facilitatorย
Makerspace responsibilities:
Help students and teachers use Makerspace equipment, tools, and technology.
Assist with projects, activities, and hands-on learning experiences.
Help maintain, organize, and prepare Makerspace equipment and work areas.
Assist with the proper use and care of 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics equipment, electronics, and other Makerspace technologies.
Help troubleshoot basic equipment and technology issues.
Support students and staff who are learning how to use new equipment and technologies.
Help keep the Makerspace clean, organized, and ready for use.
Student Assistants are expected to become knowledgeable about the equipment and technologies available in the Makerspace and to share that knowledge with others.
The Student Technology Helpdesk
Student Assistants also participate in a student-run technology helpdesk, providing technical assistance to fellow students and school staff under the direction of the Technology Coordinator.
Helpdesk responsibilities:
Assisting with password resets and basic account issues.
Troubleshooting hardware and software problems.
Providing assistance with Chromebooks, computers, and other technology.
Helping troubleshoot basic networking and connectivity issues.
Performing basic computer repairs and maintenance.
Assisting students and staff with technology-related questions.
Identifying problems that require additional support and escalating them to the School Technology Coordinator when necessary.
The goal of the student helpdesk is to provide timely, peer-to-peer technical support while giving Student Assistants valuable hands-on experience with real-world technology support.
Students interested in becoming a Makerspace and Technology Student Assistant must:
Complete a Student Assistant application.
Participate in an interview with both the Makerspace Facilitator and the School Technology Coordinator.
Be selected for the program based on their interest, skills, dependability, and ability to work well with others.
Have their name submitted to the Guidance Office for placement into their class schedule.
Each class period may have one to three Student Assistants, depending on the needs of the Makerspace and technology helpdesk.
What Is Expected of a Student Assistant?
Student Assistants are expected to:
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Be dependable, responsible, and willing to take initiative.
Demonstrate a strong interest in technology, hands-on learning, and problem-solving.
Be willing to learn about new and evolving equipment and technologies.
Work collaboratively with students, teachers, and school staff.
Communicate effectively and professionally.
Treat equipment, technology, and the Makerspace environment with care and respect.
Know when to solve a problem independently and when to ask for assistance.
Serve as positive role models for other students.
Being a Student Assistant is more than simply having a free period. It is an opportunity to learn, teach, troubleshoot, create, and support the school community while gaining practical experience with technology and emerging technologies.
