A ELO Student Makerspace Assistant plays a critical role in the functioning of the school’s makerspace. Without their support, the Makerspace wouldn't operate smoothly. These assistants are the backbone of the Makerspace, responsible for running the facility under the guidance of the Makerspace facilitator/Teacher. As well as working with the Technology Coordinator as needed.
Their main duties involve providing help to both students and teachers who utilize the Makerspace. Each class period has 1 to 3 students, assigned by the WHS Guidance Office, that serve as Makerspace Assistants. They are expected to work independently with minimal supervision and have a strong interest in learning about new and evolving equipment and technologies. It's also important that they feel comfortable collaborating with peers and school staff. In return, students earn both academic credit and community service hours for their work.
What is an ELO (Extended Learning Opportunity)?
Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) are hands-on, credit-bearing courses outside of the traditional classroom with an emphasis on community-based career exploration. They are highly personalized opportunities for students to engage in learning in ways that make sense for them and connect their learning to everyday life in meaningful ways. ELOs are a unique mix of academic instruction and assignments, such as papers and presentations, and combine experiential learning components like project-based learning, internships, and job shadows.
