Effective Questioning

What it is

What is effective questioning?

Effective questioning is a key aspect of the teaching and learning process to promote deeper thinking. Effective questions (posed by both teacher and students), are open-ended and scaffolded to deepen understanding and extend discourse, which creates opportunities to augment learning. Teachers should strive to be deliberate in their questions so that students actively create their own knowledge while feeling comfortable taking risks and asking questions to enrich learning opportunities.

*** This is a working/draft definition that will evolve over time as the district iCouncil committee continues their work on this element of the instructional framework. ***
