Independent Painting
Landscape Painting
I chose this subject for my painting because I wanted to show an aerial perspective and since the photo goes a long way out it creates depth and layers.
The background is the far sky and mountains and you can tell it’s farther back because it’s higher on the canvas and has a blue tint. The middle ground is of the main trees in the middle and the forest area because it’s higher and has less detail than the foreground. The foreground is on the lowest part of the canvas and has the most detail and vibrant colors. The textures I painted consist of flowy and translucent clouds, rocky mountains, the branches of trees, the leaves in the bushes, and many flowers.
I started from the top of the canvas with the background and proceeded lower and lower on the canvas as structures and trees covered and covered. I used a product to slow the dry process on paint to make smooth clouds that blend and fit into the sky. I first started with a first layer of a solid color to get most of the canvas painted and less translucent as it went on with layers.I sifted my brush to the outer parts of trees to capture their branches and leaves. The flowers and bushes are all dotted on, to show depth and detail in the colors and land. I learn how to use different techniques for different textures and to overlap as I go down on the canvas.
I searched up Rob Rey for the beginning of the project. He tried to create a one layer perspective with bold colors to add depth. He used intense bright colors for the parts he wanted focus and bold darker colors for the back.
I learnt to attempt to use one layer with smooth blending and creating my colors before painting so it doesn’t dry as quick. I used bright and contrasting colors just like he did to show the focal point and where I wanted people to focus on.
In the painting I am holding the moon that shines bright in the dark and reflects that light onto others to be seen even in the darkest parts. People think only the sun can shine onto you making you feel warm and seen, but the moon can feel that way too just in a different way.
In the project I think I did really well in proportions, shading, and color mixing to elevate the portrait from the original photo reference. Getting the perfect lighting was hard and to show that the moon was reflecting off of my clothes and face. I think the hands and the bottom part were less successful since it was before I could easily blend. I wanted myself to use bold contrasting colors and I think I achieved it with the bright blue and dark black.
Throughout the project I had to define the shading because of its blockiness and dull colors. My peers suggested I use a medium that slows acrylic dry time and it worked splendidly. I got done on time and used some extra time photographing the artwork.
Imagined Space Drawing
Reflection
To summarize the learning objectives of this project I used a 2-point linear perspective to shape the background and the character within. I started with the guidelines with the character to start then I built the background off of the lines I made for the character. I used 2-point to make an interesting proposition to capture the intensity of the fight with the explosions and the fog.
For the concept I thought of the show I was fixated on at the moment and I thought of how interesting the show was with their angles, colors, and fights and I wanted to incorporate that here. I thought of the character Jinx in many different poses and angles but I eventually decided upon the finished product as the one I would draw. I used three different medias while completing the drawing; colored pencils, watercolor, and paint markers were used in making the composition of the drawing and to connect further with the show since the show Arcane uses mixed media within their episodes.
The improvements I made to my drawing were fixing the pillars to make them the correct size and proportion, I added light bouncing off of objects for the explosions, and I used underpainting to get the correct skin tone of Jinx and for it to match the show's style. Feedback I got from my teacher helped me understand where things would go in order to follow the linear point perspective and I remembered that to correctly place items and objects. The most challenging part was the coloring. I didn't know if I would finish on time with colored pencils or make it to a completion point before the deadline but I solved this by using different media that are faster for less important things like the background so the focus stays on Jinx. What I enjoyed most was lining the art after finishing the sketch because it gave me a clear image to not confuse me and the line was smooth and perfectly nice with no smudges or overlines.
Diorama Drawing
In this project I learnt how to blend colored pencils and how to use lighting to make the diorama more real. I learned how to create the 3-d shape in my art by drawing the details of cardboard or where I over painted. I started by getting a cardboard box and using its shape to make my room. I then made small cardboard boxes to shape the items in my room like the bed, dresser, desk, shelf, and storage places. After making all the items I began to paint until I was done.
I wanted to create a diorama based off of my room to show my personality and interests.
I wanted to add the things that really made up my room and the general shape of it as well. It looks like how it is because of the actual things I own in my bedroom and I based it off to create the diorama.
In my shading I used lights and shadows to help create the sense of 3-D while staying a drawing. I drew the sides of the cardboard and other spaces to show that the drawing was based off of something real. My drawing is tilted slightly and most of the light is shown at the top or sides and shadows down lower.
The improvements I made in the drawing were mixing the color of the floor together, adding the painted specs to the desk and shelf, and constantly refixing the white to show the correct shading of shadows. With feedback I was able to correct the proportions in the drawing to compare better with the diorama and use the right values for the right angles.
