Our class was assigned to do a squiggle drawing. This is where we basically draw a random squiggle on a sheet of paper in black sharpie. Then, we put them in a pile and got back someone else's squiggle. Mine was the image on the left. I turned the sheet and immediately thought of the body of a person. I eventually decided to draw a lady in a dress holding a big fan. I used a pencil to sketch it out and some colored pencil to color it. Even though it doesn't have much color. I also used my white paint marker to white out some of the black sharpie.
I tried to incorporate some color and value but I don't think those are my strong points, especially with colored pencil. As you can see, the color on the fan and dress is barely visible and so is the red makeup on her face on camera. Value wise, the only noticeable thing is the hair, since I darkened it quite a bit. The composition of the piece is okay as well. I tried I fill in the space as much as possible using the fan and the ribbon thing hanging off it. I tried to add in some texture with the fan, as the yellow part was supposed to look fluffy. I like the lines and shape the best. Especially in the dress. My project was originally supposed to be only the lady, but once I drew her out I realized that there was a lot of empty space not used, making the piece look too one-sided. So I added in the fan just to fill the space.
There really is no meaning to the work, other than there being a lady holding a fan. I suppose she kind of looks like royalty, so maybe she's a queen of some sort. The drawing doesn't really relate to my life, but I got the idea of the fan from a music video I watched. Like I said before, I like the shape of the gown the best. I struggled a lot with the anatomy of the woman. As you can see, her arms are very wonky and uneven and the dress is really long. I tried to make it the same length as the squiggle to indicate that it is part of the dress, but it does make her legs look ridiculously long. I didn't really try to fix it. The arms are really the things that bother me most. I would fix those and maybe white out some of the sharpie so her body isn't so long if I were to fix this drawing in the future.
