We were given the task to do a "blind contour drawing," which is a drawing that involves the artist to draw without looking at the paper, only on the subject. This forces the artist to try to draw exactly what is in front of them. First, we used our dominant hand to draw our less dominant hand, then we switched and used our less dominant hand to draw the other hand. Lastly, we drew our face. In total, we drew three blind contour drawings. You can see mine on the left. After all this, we had to make a finished piece of artwork out of the blind contour drawings (right).
The subject of my final piece is a mish-mash collage of a bunch of faces, eyes, figures, and flowers. Also on the bottom there are some people and dogs on a path to a snow globe. I used water color and sharpie to create it.
I decided that since my original three drawings looked very out of place together so I just thought I would add a bunch of other random things to just fill the page so that it would create some sort of unity. I think the composition turned out alright, everything looks like it belongs. I think the colors help with that as well. I used a mostly red, yellow, and brown palette with touches of green here and there. This piece didn't really change while I was working on it. Since I used straight sharpie to create the outlines, I couldn't change much. I was happy with the colors I chose, so I didn't feel a need to change them either.
There really is no meaning to this piece. There's kind of a story with the dogs and people on the path. Other than that it's really a bunch of drawings put together. It doesn't relate to my life much either. I am most proud of the colors I chose in this piece and how I utilized them. I'm usually bad at choosing colors and color theory in general. But for some reason I did better than I expected I would. I did struggle a bit with the faces as I feel they look very different from each other. Even the faces that aren't blind contour drawings look odd. I tried to make some of them look like they were blind contour but I don't think that worked. I couldn't change the faces once they were on the page as I used sharpie and didn't sketch beforehand because I didn't want to clean up the lines. That's my fault, I didn't really overcome this struggle. If I were to revise this in the future, I would make the bottom left side a little more busy, as the rest of the piece has a busy looking composition and that side is pretty blank. I would maybe add some more dogs or flowers to fill in the space.
