My class was given the task to do a contour drawing (no shading) of our hand holding an object. This is similar to the blind contour drawings we did before except we can look at the paper. The subject of my creation is my hand holding chapstick. I used a pencil to make it.
I tried to mostly focus on getting the anatomy of the hand correct, so there aren't too many elements of art. Composition wise, the hand is centered to the left of the page, but I made the pinky finger stick out to the right to create balance. Mainly the subject is in the middle of the page. My project didn't evolve as I tried to keep my hand in the same pose for the duration of the drawing.
There is no meaning, it's just a hand drawing. It doesn't relate to my life, other than the reference being my own hand. I'm most proud of the chapstick. I think it's a pretty good representation of what it actually looked like or some what. I did struggle with the anatomy of the hand as the fingers were giving me trouble, especially with the thumb. The foreshortening of it is so off, I really don't like it. The other fingers are quite thin too. I'm usually okay with skinny fingers but these ones look like a skeleton's. I realized that the fingers looked weird when the time was up so I didn't fix it. If I could change it I would make the fingers thicker and fix the thumb.
For this drawing, we had the do contour drawings of three views of a shoe (side, front, and arial). The subject of the drawing are my shoes.
For this drawing I also tried to spend most of my energy getting the proportions of the shoes correct, so the composition isn't very creative. I just put the shoes where everyone else was putting them. I did try to draw in the netting pattern on the sneakers to create more texture, but since this is an observational drawing, you really can't do too much except copy what you see. This piece did change somewhat as the shoe in the top left corner used to be filled in with pencil because the shoe is black in person. But since this is a contour drawing, I wasn't supposed to do that which was a mistake on my part. So I had to erase all the shading.
There is no meaning to this drawing since it was just an observational piece. It doesn't relate to my life much. I'm most proud of the shoe at the bottom left (arial view) because I think it looks pretty accurate to real life and doesn't look as flat as the other two. I think I struggled the most with the front view of the shoe. As you may've guessed, I'm not good with foreshortening. This view doesn't look right. It didn't really get resolved. If I were to keep working on it, I would change the front view to make it look more realistic.
