Gait Analysis

For the Gait Analysis project, we worked in our capstone groups, and were challenged with analysing the gaits of our classmates and potentially others in order to create a predictive model. My teammates are Gabe Choi, Marie Fehring, and James Ghirardo. We focused on the correlation between height and y-axis movement while running. To do this, we compared average y-axis movement to the average height for Americans.

Gait Analysis

To the left is our google sheet, which contains all of our raw data and graphs of each participants walking and running data. We used this to organise our findings before putting our data down on our gait analysis report (which can be found below, under our slideshow presentation). This probably isn't very exciting to look at, but was a vital piece of our process.

Gait Predictive Model Presentation

Accelerometer: A device that measures the physical acceleration experienced by an object.

Dynamicity: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of variations in kinematic or kinetic parameters within a step.

Gait: The stride of a human as s/he moves his/her limbs.

Metric: A quantitative indicator of a characteristic or attribute.

Model: In technology, a description of observed or predicted behavior of some system, simplified by ignoring certain details. Models allow complex systems to be understood and their behavior predicted.

Symmetry: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of differences between left-foot and right-foot steps.

Variability: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of fluctuations from one stride to the next.

Reflection

The collaboration in this project was great. Everyone was a part of making this project work, and we all made valuable contributions and observations in terms of our data. We definitely played to our strengths in this one, which is a good skill to practice, particularly with our Capstonr Project groups. The communication within our team was great throughout the project, although we could have managed our time better.

While we were able to complete all of our work for our Gait Analysis Project in time for our presentation, we definitely did have a lot to do right at the end, which is never good. In the future, I want to make an effort to help my team be more organised from the beginning. I also want to make sure everyone (myself included) understands exactly what is expected of us for the week and relative to a specific project. I think that this is where issues arose for me, personally, in this project.
