College & Career Readiness

I transferred into my CCR class after the beginning of the semester, and the first project we did when I got there was the Transportation Budget Project, in which students were asked to choose car to "purchase", and then find information for it such as it's price, a down payment, MPG, and monthly payments. Below is my slide. I chose the 1957 Thunderbird.

Another project we did was the Vacation Budget Project, in which we planned our dream vacations. For mine, I chose to go to Croatia because my grandparents live there.

Reflection: Vacation Budget Project

I think that this project most well reflected cultural competence in the graduate profile. I learned about Croatia while working on this, and I think that being there would also allow me to understand and respect different cultures and people. I think that this project also built character. It allowed students to develop skills in empathy by teaching about conditions in different places, and by allowing them to compare themselves to locals of the place they are visiting. It also provided an opportunity for students to develop integrity or apply their own morals in their travel plans. It also let students show respect for different types of people, the places they traveled, and the workers that they may have interacted with. We learned about tipping both here and in different countries. We were able to understand were it is proper to tip and how much is a typical or reasonable tip.

The next project we did was the career clusters research project; here is my presentation:

Human Services

Reflection: Career Clusters Research Project

This project allowed students to explore career options in their assigned field, and discover jobs that interest them even in fields that may not. This was a very fun project. I was able to find fascinating careers in a career cluster that did not initially interest me.

Next, we did a Career Research Project

Veterinary Surgery/Biomedical Engineering

After this, we practiced writing application essays for University of California schools.

To the right is mine. I chose the prompt about the academic subject that inspires me most, which I consider to be biology.

I think that the category of the six C's that this most helped me develop was being a conscientious learner. It was important to be aware of who I was writing to and way in order to present myself as an appealing candidate at UC schools. The most difficult part of this assignment for me was definitely keeping my essay within the 350 word limit.

Overall, this was a very valuable assignment and I think it helped me build an understanding of what will be expected of me in three years when I must apply to colleges.

Next we focused on applying for jobs and the interview process.

We applied for jobs online to see what jobs were good fits and what applications would be like. I applied for a position at Petco as a pet salesman because I love working with and around animals and would love to get as much experience as possible.

We then completed a series of assigned interview questions in preparation for commonly asked questions. These were interesting to consider and nice to be familiar with so that they can be expected when really applying for jobs or internships. Below are my responses.

Later, we practiced writing a cover letter for an application and organizing a resume. This was my favourite part of this unit because I got to spend time working on a resume that I can actually use and update in the future. Here are my cover letter and resume.
