Our goal of the project was to design a working trebuchet the can launch a projectile as far as possible. We started work on the trebuchet rough, but on the second day we picked it up fast. Me and my group didn't really understand the first steps which was to pick one modification and take data for this modification. Because of our flawed design with shaky legs, we spent an entire day doing modifications that we were not supposed to do and ended up not taking data. However, we got the hang of it and ended up with a great final design the went far and had all of the things that we wanted to have original.
- Spring Constant-28.6 N/m (the resistance to stretching in the rubber bands)
- Spring Potential Energy-2.2J (the amount of energy stored in the rubber bands when pulled back all the way)
- Kinetic Energy-0.062J (the amount of energy in the projectile while it is moving through the air)
- Horizontal Velocity-13.36 m/s(30 mph) (the speed at which the projectile traveled horizontally)
- Vertical Velocity-7.54 m/s (16.9 mph) (the speed at which the projectile is moving upwards)
- Total Velocity-15.15 m/s (34.7) (the overall speed in both directions together)
- Vertical Height/distance-Vertical-10.4m (34.1ft) / Horizontal-19.5m (64ft) (The distance traveled on the x and y axis)
One thing that I think I did well in this project is realizing where I went wrong before it became too much of a problem. At the start of the project, I realized that we were not doing the same thing as other groups, and I found out that we needed to be doing something else. If I had not have realized this, I think that our final model would not have ended up as well as we wanted it too. I also think that I improved on my collaboration which is something I wanted to improve on in the last project. I was able to use my teammates for help rather than the teacher and sometimes I caught myself asking the teacher something that my teammates most likely knew.
One thing that I definitely need to improve on is paying attention to the instructions. When I heard that we were building a trebuchet, I got sidetracked thinking about the way I could build it and missed the important parts about measuring the data of the trebuchet's launch and making the correct modifications. I think that this falls into the category of conscientious learning. Although I think that I did improve on my collaboration skills this project, I still want to try and be a better teammate and get help from my group members instead of the teachers. I think it would help my teammates and me because if I asked my teammates for help on a practice problem for example, they could teach me how to solve it or show me what the correct answer is, and the best way to keep knowledge is to teach it to someone else, so I think that the main goal that I have is still to try and collaborate with my group more often than I go to the teacher.
