At the beginning of this project my group and I were asked to brain storm one of the millions of problems that plague our world. And then attempt to solve or at least help prevent or limit the problem. So me and my group decided that the problem we would attempt to solve would be the fentanyl epidemic.
Since we knew that fentanyl was a nation wide problem we knew it was going to be very difficult to completely solve it. So we decided that our solution would be Narcan vending machines.( Narcan is a nasal spray that reverses the effects of fentanyl with a success rate of 75-100%). These machines would be located all over San Francisco, and serve as a life saver for anyone on the verge of an opioid induced overdose. Next we knew in order for this to actually happen we would need some sort of funding. So we decided that we would look to non profits, and the CDC for funding of our project, which would cost around $75,000. Finally after reasearching all the parts we needed, and making a rough draft of what the machines would look like. My group and I compiled all of our findings into a google slide to be presented as our final project.
After brainstorming for about half of our class my group and I decided that we wanted to focus on the fentanyl epidemic. However we knew that since this was a big issue there was no way of completely solving it, so we mainly focused on helping prevent overdose. But specifically in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Once we figured out our topic we took 2 full days to research every part of the fentanyl epidemic. With each group member with a total of 45 annotations, and 5 annotations from a graph.
My group looked at many possible solutions that could be implemented. We totaled around 15 ideas, with some being useless, and others having nothing to do with fentanyl. But we ended up with a couple of promising solutions.
My group and I decided that one way we could help the fentanyl epidemic was by creating vending machines that would have narcan readily available in case of any overdoses.
After selecting our solution we got to work on creating a rough draft of what we wanted our machine to look like. As well as researching how much everything would cost, and what non profits we would look to help raise money.
After we created the idea of what we wanted we went to work on the specifics of it and how the machine would fully work. Like if it would be free, how to make it a safe space, and how to allow people to get narcan but not stock pile all of it.
Finally after we had gone through lots of research and redesign with our idea, we had a final project and blueprint ready to present. Although we didn't have the actual machine we had all the steps and blue prints in order to make it a real idea.
I believe that during this project one of my strengths was that I was able to think critically and problem solve well. Throughout the project there were times where I didn't understand a lot, or didn't know what to do. But I was able to push through and figure out what needed to be done, in order to help my group. I also think that I was able to collaborate very well doing this project since I did my part as best as I was able to. As well picking up some of my group members slack when they didn't do what was needed.
Although I do feel like this project was an overall success there are a couple of areas that could use some work. I do feel like my compassion could have been a lot better during this project. Since I felt like I got angry a lot when other group members didn't do their part, or didn't help out. I also felt as though I could of communicated how I felt a bit better. So maybe my other teammates could have known how I felt and changed how they acted.
