Validating Career Choices

Teacher:

For my first career path, I chose teacher from the education and training career cluster. This career aligns with many of my motivators and behavior styles. While being a teacher, I can be cooperative and agreeable, which aligns with my low D style. I will have to listen to the parents and students to accomodate for everyone’s needs and we have to agree and be cooperative for that to work well. I also have a low I style, so being a teacher works with being a low I with the characteristics reflective and factual. I would need to know what I am teaching for the students to succeed and I would also teach the students to reflect upon what they learned. I have a high S style, and many of the high S characteristics align with teaching. Schools are always on tight schedules, so being routine driven and efficient will allow me to use my time wisely to teach, but while staying on schedule. Finally, I have a high C style, which relates through organization, cautiousness, and detail orientation. Being organized and detail oriented is perfect for the teaching career because I would be able to make sure that I get every little detail of the material to the students, and also keeping their work organized. Also being cautious is useful because then I can lower the chances of a child getting injured while under my supervision.

My top two motivators are theoretical and social. These both relate to the teaching career because I value knowledge and I want to give back to society. I would value the knowledge of the material that I would teach, and teaching students about things they need to know is a way of giving back to society.

I am also good at time and priority management, planning, and goal orientation. This aligns with teaching because planning and time management are good for teaching lessons and other material. Also goal orientation allows me to set time frames in which I want to complete something, and work towards it.

Teaching also aligns with my top two work values. My top two are friendship and companionship and knowledge and truth. For friendship and companionship, I would be able to really get to know the students well and talk to them in a friendly way. For knowledge and truth, that one relates to the material that I value and that I teach others.

Two of my must haves for my career values are being friendly/talkative and enthusiastic. Both of these work well with teaching so that the students will like me and my classroom environment and being enthusiastic allows them to become more interested in the material being taught. It also aligns with some of my don’t wants by being a job that is not challenge oriented and it is not a job that has always changing co-workers.

Teaching is a career that aligns with many of my motivators and DISC behavior and values, so it would be a perfect job for me.

Chef/Cook:

For my second career path, I chose chef/cook from the hospitality and tourism career cluster. This career aligns with many of my motivators and behavior styles. While being a chef, I can be cooperative and agreeable, which aligns with my low D style. I will have to listen to the customers and other staff members to accomodate for everyone’s needs and we have to agree and be cooperative for that to work well, and to make sure that all orders are done correctly. I also have a low I style, but being a chef doesn’t really align that much with being a low I, but since I am a bridge, I can also have some of the characteristics from the high I style too. The ones that would align the most with mine would be high energy and friendly/talkative. I have to be kind and friendly to everyone to keep everyone happy and so that others enjoy being around me. Being high energy will also allow me to motivate everyone to work harder and get everything done at a faster pace. I have a high S style, and many of the high S characteristics align with teaching. Restaurantes/cafes are always busy and run on schedule, so being routine driven and efficient will allow me to use my time wisely to cook, and also being on time to work to keep everything flowing. Finally, I have a high C style, which relates through organization and detail orientation. Being organized and detail oriented is perfect for the cooking career because I would be able to make sure that I make all of the food with good quality, and looking nice. Organization will also allow me to easily find my commonly used recipes and know which food is for which customer.

My top two motivators are theoretical and social. These both relate to the chef career because I value knowledge and I want to give back to society. I would value the knowledge of the recipes that I would cook with often and I would value the customers’ favorites, preparing and giving food to others is a way of giving back to others.

I am also good at time and priority management, continuous learning, and planning and organizing. This aligns with cooking because priority and time management are good for making sure all of the right orders go out with a reasonable amount of customer waiting time. Planning and organizing allows me to make more of a dish than a single customer would want, so that I have extras for the next time someone orders that dish and I have extras already finished. I can also incorporate new recipes that I have learned recently and want to learn more to make out restaurant/cafe even better.

Cooking also aligns with my top two work values. My top two are friendship and companionship and knowledge and truth. For friendship and companionship, I would be able to really get to know the other staff members well and talk to them as friends would. For knowledge and truth, that one relates to the recipes and the customers who love our place.

Two of my must haves for my career values are being friendly/talkative and enthusiastic. Both of these work well with being a chef so that the customers and staff will like me and our environment and being enthusiastic allows me to be more interested in what I am making. It also aligns with some of my don’t wants by being a job that is not a quiet job, like an office job or a job with strict regulations, so we can be creative in what we make at our restaurant/cafe.

Teaching is a career that aligns with many of my motivators and DISC behavior and values, so it would be a perfect job for me.

Life is not all about money and spending, it is about enjoying your life and creating happiness for yourself, and being successful in they way you want to.
