What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?
A Rube Goldberg Machine is a collection of simple machines that ends by completing a task.
What was our assignment?
We were tasked with making our own Rube Goldberg machine that we would present to judges and parents. We had 9 build days to finish and a few days to practice our presentation.
These are my groups original and final blueprints for our RB project. We changed a few things along the building process including the screw and the way the treasure fall in the chest.
Original Final
👇Below is our final product of our Rube Goldberg machine👇
Here are a few things we integrated into our work
Force- The push or pull of an object. This is calculated by multiply an objects mass by its acceleration. In our project a car had a force of 0.02 newtons.
Velocity- The rate of distance covered in a certain direction because it is a vector. To find velocity time how long something takes to go a certain distance and divide distance over time. In our project a ball had a velocity of 0.32 meters per second.
Acceleration- The rate of change in velocity. How much something is speeding up or slowing down.
Work- Amount of energy put into something. When the space shuttle was pushed up, that is an example of work.
Potential Energy- This is the amount of energy an object has before it goes into motion. For example the treasure before it fell in the chest had a potential energy of 1.7 joules.
Kinetic Energy- This is how much energy a object has while in motion. For example the golf ball going down the pipe had a kinetic energy of 1.32 joules at the end of the pipe.
Mechanical Advantage- This is how much easier a machine makes something work. In our project, a pulley that we had had a MA of 2.
Simple Machines- A simple machine is a basic mechanical advice used for apllying force. In our project we had inclined planes, a lever, a screw, a wheel and axle, two pulleys, and a wedge.
Blue Prints- blue prints are a technical design plan that you make for a structure. We made two blueprints, one before we started and the other after we made some changes.
Reflection
Over the course of this project, I learned some stuff about myself that I never noticed. Like how I can be very assertive if I need to, and I am pretty quick to judge, which is not always a good thing. During the building of the machine, I played the role of the leader, and I told my group what needed to be done. I helped in every part of the machine and presentation to the best of my ability.
Our group as a whole worked very well together. When something was needed to get done, we would do it. We all listened to each others ideas, and did our best to work together. I worked on the building and did some of the slides. Nathan did most of the slides and helped with building, and Freddy did most of the design work that brought everything together.
Something I would like to work on and apply to the next project would be listening to more ideas, so we can see a wider range of possibilities instead of picking the first good idea that we have. Another thing I would like to work on would be working on my presenting skills by having better body language and having more confidence when speaking.
