Our task was to make a video showing how to improve your skills in a specific sport using physics. For our project we chose how to use physics when throwing a pitch.
👈 On the left is our final product of our video
To do this project we had to make a script, plan out our video, take the videos of our motion, and edit. First we came up with ideas as a group and decided on doing the science behind throwing a pitch in baseball. Then we made our script and filmed our pieces for the video. Then we narrated the video and edited.
Below is our script and story board
Physics Concepts
Below are the different physics concepts that we included in our video.
Force of Impact- This is the force that is generated when to object meet. In our project the baseball hit the glove with a force of impact of 44 lbs.
Horizontal Velocity- This is how fast and object is going in a horizontal direction (left or right). In our project the baseball had a horizontal velocity of 60 mph. We know this by dividing the distance over time.
Vertical Velocity- This is how fast an object is going in a vertical direction (up or down). In our project the ball had a vertical Velocity of 15 mph.
Total Velocity- This is the combined velocity of both vertical and horizontal. Since in our project the ball flew mostly straight our total velocity was also 60 mph.
Transfer of Momentum- This is when the energy in one thing is transferred to another thing. In our project the pitcher transferred his momentum for his body to the baseball making it go.
Spin- This how much force the pitcher is using to make the ball spin. In our case I was putting 5.7 newtons or 1.28 lbs of force into spinning the ball.
Air Resistance- This is the force acting against a object while in the air. It has to do with the density of the air and the circumference of the object. In our project the baseball was being hit with a air resistance of 10.04 newtons.
On the right is a picture of all of our calculations that we used to figure out the physics concepts above.
Reflection
Over the course of the project my group and I were very well at working together to get everything done well and on time. We were great at communicating by letting each other know what we needed to get done, and splitting the work evenly based on our skills. A knew skill that personally gained from this project is being able to edit videos to make them run smooth, look good, and sound good. We even added extra physics content about spin and air resistance for a level 4.
Something we could of done better as a group was to follow the rubric more so that we didn't have to make a bunch of little changes at the very end. We kind of got off task at the start by making a video more about the actual sport instead of all the physics. But we made changes and made our video to the best of our ability in the end.
Some goals I have for the next project would be to work well with my group again, and get everyone's ideas and skills used to the best we can. As well as following the rubric better so we do everything we need to do. Over all I had a great time doing this project and I hope to do more like it.
