This project was used to test our abilities of experiment design, graphical analysis, and finding relationships in data. The project started with a challenge specifically to help us get acquainted with Google Sheets, which is the spreadsheet program we would use for this project. After that, we were told to find a relationship between height and gait. To find characteristics of a person's gait, we used an accelerometer app on one of our teammate's iphones. The app allowed us to export the data it had recorded to Google Sheets, which included force in 3 dimensions, total force, and times. We turned these data points into graphs, and from those extrapolated an equation that related force in a certain direction while a person is walking to that person's height.
A software designed to manipulate and analyse numbers and formulas in rows and columns. Spreadsheet programs include Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. For this project, we exclusively used Google Sheets.
Raw facts, for example a collection of numbers. Our data was collected by an accelerometer app before being placed directly into a spreadsheet.
Spreadsheets provide built-in functions to perform calculations with available data. Some functions include Min, Max, Sum, Average, STDEV (standard deviation)
A single cell in a spreadsheet can contain either an alphanumeric or a numeric value. Alphanumeric values can be headings or labels, while numeric values can be integers, floating points, equations and formulae, or predefined functions.
During this project, I think I used an improved my critical thinking. Once we had our data and graphs in the spreadsheet, it was difficult to decipher a pattern between the data points, but my group persevered and used our experience with experimental problem-solving, we were able to establish a fairly good model from our data. I think I also improved my collaboration in this project. There were several absences during the course of this project, so we got a late start on it. Once everyone was present, I helped to take control to get us up to date on what we needed to complete. I took initiative to start experiments because they were necessary even though we were doing them after most groups had moved on to a different stage.
As a result of this project, I would like to improve my conscientious learning. As I said above, we had some early absences in our group. While the project turned out fine, I should have started on it earlier and relied a bit less on my teammates to start the project. I would also like to improve my cultural competency as a result of this project. We found that there was some relationship between the forces that a person creates while walking and their height, but we should have at least brought up that there are several other factors that could come into play, like injuries, growth disorders, and many other things.
