On this project we were told to investigate a murder in which the victim had eaten at one of three restaurants before his death. Using a combination of indicator solutions and standard tests, we compared the macromolecules of his stomach contents to his three possible meals. At the end, we wrote a CLEAR paragraph to explain our findings and hypothesize on which restaurant he was at last.
This was a challenge assigned to us in which we had to create a nutritionally complete diet with just food from a fast food restaurant. I found that with two burgers and several drinks from In-n-out, you could come close to a relatively healthy diet in terms of macromolecule content.
Large molecules, including carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins, and are essential to most life.
The molecules that make up make up macromolecules, and includes monosaccharides, nucleotides, amino acids, and fatty acids.
A macromolecule found in breads, pasta, ect. that provides short-term energy.
A macromolecule found in anything with DNA that carries genetic code for the organism that eats it.
A macromolecule found in oils and fats that mainly serves as cell membranes.
Macromolecule found in mainly meat that works as long-term energy and as building blocks for tissue.
The units of molecules that humans use, which mostly consist of just repeating chains of macromolecules.
I think this project helped me gain a more fundamental understanding of nutrition. This is because I learned about exactly what each of the macromolecules do inside of our bodies. Additionally, this project helped me use my critical thinking to apply something that seems very isolated (macromolecules) to something that somebody could actually relate to. (Murder and a Meal).
However, I think I could have improved on my creativity in this project. For example, in the Fast Food challenge, instead of finding new foods to add to the diet to make it reasonable, i just kept adding the same thing over and over. Although it worked, I could have spent more time making it a more normal looking diet. Additionally, I think I could have worked on collaboration a bit more in this project. On a couple of occasions, we had the option to work with other people on some assignments, but I did not. Hopefully, I can do this more on the next project.
