Solving a world problem is a very hard task, as it should be. We started this project off by brainstorming dozens of problems we see around our campus, community, and world. After lots of brainstorming, we decided drug abuse was a topic we were deeply interested in and want to solve. We spent the next few days gathering data from multiple sources and readings. We annotated and wrote down key takeaways found from each source. Annotating and breaking down this data greatly helped our knowledge and understanding of drug abuse and how it affects everyone in our communities even if you are not an active user. For example, did you know there are over 4 billion prescriptions prescribed every year? After a group discussion, we finally decided to focus on prescription drug abuse and overdoses. An average of 44 people die per day just in opioid-related overdoses. This was a huge point to us because prescriptions are supposed to help nurse people and get them healthy and so many deaths come from these drugs. Finding a solution to drug abuse is very hard if you ever give it a try. Nearly every idea we came up with had already been tried, already was in place, or was not realistic. We began to think about why so many overdoses happen and how they are treated. We found a medication called Narcan which can be taken in many different ways but most commonly in a nasal spray. Narcan is carried by every pharmacy, fire crew, ambulance, school, etc. In case someone is overdosing it can be taken to stop the overdose. The good thing about Narcan is that if it's taken but not needed it does not cause any extra damage to the body. As you may be able to tell Narcan is a widely accessible and can easily be accessed by any body that needs it. So why should it be implemented more? Our solution is to implement Narcan with every fire extinguisher in any building or public place available. We believe doing so would stop a majority of drug overdoses and can save thousands if not millions of lives.
This project was harder for me because my work ethic was limited and un focused because I was in a group with my friends. One thing we did well was work together and create compromises instead of arguing about things our whole project time. This helped us be more efficient and get more work done in a single sitting. Another thing we did well was problem solve and brainstorm ideas for every problem or idea we had in our group. Everyone was able to contribute ideas and this led to us creating good solutions for a good cause. One problem our group had was determining who was doing what for the project. We often found ourselves doing the same piece of work because we had not talked about what we were working on. In order to be better in my next project I can do many things but my goal is to pick a good group and better my communication skills to make my work ethic the best I can.
