Writing Poetry

poetry portfolio

In this unit, we were given a packet with multiple different poems to analyse as well as poetic devices to define and practice by writing poems of our own using them.

My poems

Dear Betrayal

tell the world how it feels

For this assignment, we were to write a poem "to the world" about how it feels. I wrote a poem called "Dear Betrayal" where I described the pain that I had been through at a certain point of time. Throughout the end of the poem I begin the further explain how I overcame it.

I am Alive

tell the world what you love

For this assignment, we were given the task to write about the things we love about the world that we live in. Although, I took a different turn and chose to write why I love living on this beautiful planet that we were given the opportunity to live on, despite the negativity in the world. I displayed this all in my poem "I am Alive."

Special Place Poem

tell the world about a special place

For this assignment, we were to write about a special place that you have visited, envisioned, planned to see one day, etc. Personally, I wrote about an experience that I had at the Terranea Resort in Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA. I described the strong connection that I felt with God while watching the waves in a cove on the beach.

Review

This was by far my favorite unit that I had done in English. I was not only able to learn a lot about poetry all together, but I was also able to improve and advance my writing skills which was my #1 goal coming into this course. Throughout the unit, I used communication skills through my poems. I was able to freely express myself and put my feelings and thoughts into words. I also constantly used critical thinking before writing a lot of my poems. One of the reasons why the words in my poems flowed smoother than some of my other writings was none other than the fact that I was so inspired to write them. For example, during my I am Alive poem, I researched information on different life statistics. But, I also put a lot of thought into the subjects surrounding it and how it can be put artistically into words.

One of the 6 C's that I think I could've additionally embraced more was cultural competence. All of my poems were focused on myself as well as my personal experiences. Towards the future, I would love to incorporate more diversity, including the points of views of those around me. Along with this, I would love to further add collaboration to my research portion of writing before composing my poems. This could even mean interviewing others and discussing their emotions and opinions towards certain topics, etc.

Other than writing the poems themselves, my favorite part of this overall experience was participating in our class-wide poetry slam. Although I love a good contest and strive for competition, it was not the adrenaline in my blood that spiked my enjoyment. Instead, it was the pride that I felt finally being able to showcase all of the hard work that I had put into my poems.
