This Winter, I thought it would be fun to interview dance talent, shoe fanatic, interest-filled sophomore Sofia Martinez! Sofia is super indie-cool, and I loved hearing her insights on different topics.
If you were a type of clothing, what do you think you would be? Describe your favorite article of clothing that you own in that category.
I think I would be a turtleneck. They are the superior form of sweaters in the fall and winter. My favorite turtleneck is probably my sheer dark purple and black turtleneck. It’s pretty versatile.
Do you have any controversial fashion opinions?
Turtlenecks are cool.
The “clean girl” aesthetic is overrated.
perhaps this sentence could read:
"The coquette aesthetic is pretty, but a lot of people who follow it seem to romanticize mental illness and the concept of being a 'sad girl'. Also, movies like The Virgin Suicides further perpetuate this romanticism."
The need to find and be confined to a certain aesthetic is stupid; wear what you want.
I so agree. What are your favorite color palettes to wear?
I love to wear deep reds, purples, greens, and blues. I don’t really like orange or yellow. I also love silver.
Wearing pants under skirts/dresses: yes or no?
No, for most cases. I guess if you want to do a more outrageous y2k editorial look then cool.
Who is your favorite fashionista/fashion inspo?
I don’t know if I have one person or thing that necessarily inspires me; I kind of just see random outfits or pieces that I think are cool.

If you could have the wardrobe of any TV show or movie, which one would you pick?
I think I would love to have the wardrobe from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. All of the costumes are so fun and extravagant.
Very pretty. Are you a gold jewelry or a silver jewelry person? Does it depend? Why?
I’m definitely a silver jewelry person because I think my skin has cool undertones. Silver is supposed to look good on people with cool undertones.
You’re a dancer - What is your favorite psych outfit you’ve ever worn?
My favorite psych outfit for the dance team was probably the Gossip Girl one because I sometimes like to wear preppy clothes.
I know you love shoes. Describe your favorite pair of shoes, your most unique pair of shoes, and a pair of shoes you wish you had.
My favorite pair of shoes are my green and purple cumulus John Fluevog shoes. They’re short heels with a buckle on the strap. Or my platform black boots. I love platform shoes. I love Jeffrey Campbell shoes, like “Dead-Wrong,” “Xandra-Lo,” and “Freesia.” Pretty much just platform heeled boots. I also want the Nike dunk lows in black and red.

What is your go-to favorite snack?
My favorite go-to snack is probably goldfish or pretzels.
If you could invent any job, what would you want to do for a living?
I would want to be Barbie, because she can be an astronaut, doctor, fashion designer…basically anything. I love biology, neuroscience, and psychology, but I also love painting, playing guitar, and fashion. I would have a job that would allow me to have time for all my interests.
If you could be a part of any band to go on tour for a day, which one would you choose and why?
I would go on tour with Queen (the original group), because I grew up on their music, and Freddie Mercury had amazing outfits in the 1970s and ‘80s. I prefer his ‘70s outfits though. I also like Queen because all of the members of the band are educated and went to college. They’re pretty cool.
