Hello, Needham High School! As the spring sport season is just beginning and we are all longing for the summer, the NHS SAMD board knows that there is only one thing on your minds: What is the SAMD 2023 musical? Well, keep reading to find out!
As you may notice, this announcement is coming on the early side. Last year, we announced the show at our soiree in early May. However, it was excruciating for us to keep the show a secret for so long. Having access to such a powerful piece of knowledge for the theater community was frustrating and exhausting at best, and having that sort of power was of no enjoyment to any members of the SAMD board.

In past years, that pain has been alleviated by those wonderful students who pour over every single SAMD Instagram story and are eventually able to correctly guess the show. But for some reason, last year, not a SINGLE person was able to use the hints that we so lovingly provided to correctly guess the show! This was simply unbelievable, considering the multitude of very obvious hints that we gave. How could anyone not look at a fake playbill titled “Hello” or “The Subway Dwarves: The Musical” with no other context and not immediately think “Addams Family”? The stupidity of the theater community blows the minds of all SAMD board members, because, if you were to point to any of the hints posted last year, any one of us would be able to tell you exactly how it is very clearly connected to the Addams Family. Any of the 220 dedicated followers of @samdnhs should have been able to figure it out as well. We as a board are truly disappointed.

Now, before we announce the show, we would like to re-state the role that the SAMD board plays in the theater community. Our jobs include selecting the show that is most likely to anger Mr. Sicotte as our fall production, casting ourselves and the rest of the auditionees in each show, admitting only our best friends onto the SAMD board, and paying Ms. Mazzocchi and Mr. Vanderwoude with the money that we raise at our annual SAMD soiree. Yes, funding for the arts program here at NHS has stooped to the level where the salaries of the artistic staff depend on how many cupcakes we sell, and the SAMD board is currently responsible for ensuring that our staff are paid, so consider making a purchase at the soiree. It makes a big difference in whether we have a director or not, and it is called “Students Acting to Make a Difference” for a reason!

In terms of casting, some consider SAMD board members casting themselves in the SAMD musicals to be unfair and biased, which is why we are brutally honest with one another in the casting process. In fact, we are all asked to audition in front of the rest of the board, and should somebody have a subpar audition, they are locked in Ms. Mazzocchi’s candy drawer for a full week (and obviously cut from the show). That’s the real reason SAMD is able to maintain a so-called “no-cuts” policy without having overly large casts. Genius, right?!

I’d be remiss not to mention the greatest hint that we’ve given: our chosen charity. Members of the SAMD community tend to assume that our chosen charity is always connected to our chosen show, which is obviously true. In fact, we came very close to donating the money from Addams Family to a nonprofit that works towards making ghosts visible to the mortal eye, but unfortunately the heads of the non-profit weren’t particularly communicative, so we had to settle for our second choice, Circle of Hope. So considering the fact that we will be sticking with Circle of Hope as our non-profit partner for the 2023 SAMD season, one can only assume that our 2023 SAMD show will also be a repeat of a previous show. And they would be correct! Without further ado, the 2023 SAMD show is…NEWSIES!! PART 2!!

That’s right, everyone said they loved it so much, so we decided to do it again! Tried and true! But go ahead, tell us we’re lying, and come see for yourself at the SAMD Soiree on Saturday, May 6th at 7pm :)
