Hilly's Mask Etiquette Reminders

Hey guys, Hilly here! I assume it has been quite a hectic 2022 for you all. From the COVID spike in January to being mask friendly now, a lot has definitely happened! I hope everyone’s mask friendly experience at Needham has been a pleasant one. I’m here to remind everyone of proper etiquette now that many people’s full faces are showing.

It goes without saying that we need not comment on whether someone is or is not wearing a mask. The most important thing is respecting people’s choices!

That being said, some of you may have gotten used to sitting with your mouth slightly open or chewing gum a little bit too obnoxiously. Personally, I am of the belief that if you are chewing gum, no one else needs to know! So let’s just keep in mind that before masks, you would not have thought twice about keeping your mouth shut while there was food in it. I am a fan of Orbit’s sweet mint gum and will truly miss the way my eyes water when I try to chew mint gum with a mask on. Remember, now that others can see your face, everyone can see that your tongue is hanging slightly out of your mouth at the corner. Previously, we wouldn't have noticed but now, we can tell.

I would say putting on chapstick during these dry winter months has gotten quite a bit easier. Instead of having to pull your mask down and then feeling your eyes water from minty chapstick (notice a pattern here?), you now get to do it in plain sight. Is this actually a plus? I truly don’t know because I can think of very few things more awkward than putting on chapstick.

That being said, let’s remember to be kind and respectful to everyone! I know many of us feel as though the pandemic is coming to an end so let’s not fumble it at the goal line. Be respectful and stay safe and I will see you all in the next edition!

With love,

Hilly
