There’s no debate that the Needham High School girls’ volleyball program is one of the most successful teams around. One could argue that their talented and passionate group of athletes are their biggest asset, but their dedicated coaching staff is just as important. Needham girls volleyball has achieved remarkable success in recent years, and their strong teamwork, exceptional skills, and strategic gameplay are parts of what makes them competitive opponents on the court. Their matches are filled with excitement, energy, and thrilling moments, and it's truly inspiring to see their determination and commitment to the sport. In order to get a true understanding of the Needham Girls’ Volleyball philosophy, we spoke with head coach Courtney Todesco to get her thoughts and insights on the program’s success.

Coaches Courtney Todesco, Meaghan Kaplan, and Jessica Davis are the hearts and souls of the Needham High School girls' volleyball team. Their expertise and guidance have helped the program reach new heights. Coach Todesco instills a strong work ethic, discipline, and a positive mindset in players. When asked what aspect of Needham’s program she was most proud of, coach Todesco commented “I feel like we’ve done such a great job over the years of building a reputation of building a very kind, nice, and inclusive program”. Coach Todesco's passion for the sport and love for her players have allowed her program to become one of the most successful in the Bay State Conference.

One of the many reasons for Needham girls’ volleyball’s success is their optimism and grit. While talking with Head Coach Todesco, she explained how “It takes a village and every person plays an equally important piece in that village”. In the Needham Girls Volleyball Program, everyone plays a crucial role in creating a successful team. Whether you're a player, coach, or supporter, everyone contributes their unique strengths and skills. Together, they form a strong village, where every individual is respected and valued for their contributions to the team's success. This village metaphor shows part of how Coach Todesco has created an inclusive and supportive environment, which is part of what makes the Needham Girls Volleyball Program so special.

The girls 2023 season began with an impressive 3-game win streak against Milton, Concord-Carlisle and Weymouth which contributed to their current record of 13-3. Since September, Needham has gathered wins against skilled teams like Natick and Barnstable. They’ve also put up a good fight against top teams like Newton-North and Newton-South. Their recent success has landed them the #5 spot in the MIAA power rankings as of October 24th. Hopefully Needham’s impressive record will help them secure a safe spot in the playoffs. Last year the team took a tough 3-2 loss to Attleboro in the first round of the playoffs, but Coach Todesco believes that loss gave them “a little increased hunger … and a need for redemption”. After last year's difficult end to the season, the team appears more determined than ever to make a strong comeback. The players have been working incredibly hard, practicing their skills, and building a resilient team spirit. With their dedication, passion, and unwavering support for each other, there's no doubt that they are ready to dominate the postseason and show everyone what they're truly capable of!

It’s great programs like the Needham girls’ volleyball team that contribute to Needham’s strong athletics program. Coach Todesco’s mindset is part of what makes the program so successful.

With only a few weeks left until playoffs, we wish Needham girls’ volleyball the best of luck in their postseason games. Thank you coach Courtney Todesco for the awesome interview and we encourage anyone who can to come out and support the team as they strive for another state title!
