NHS Junior Skylar Helfman is an artsy, tiramisu-loving fashionista and a pleasure to interview. Keep reading for her angle on fashion!

How would you describe your style in a few words?

Comfy, classic, and minimal.

How elegant! How does social media play a role in fashion for you?

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest and I think that helps me create a sort of idea about what I want to share and the things I post. I’m not really big on making posts, but I love making [Instagram] stories and sharing photos.

Do you gravitate towards any specific color palettes? How about silhouettes?

I feel like I wear a lot of darker palettes; blacks and grays stand out. I like wearing a pop of color here and there too, though, and with the weather getting warmer I definitely want to explore color more. I love more tight-fitted silhouettes, especially in the spring and summer. Though, in the fall/winter I’m all for sweaters and sweatpants.

Is there a relationship between your fashion sense and your artwork?

Definitely not. I feel like my clothes are super minimalist and plain in terms of color and styles, whereas my art work is more expressive and colorful.

That’s so interesting! Who is your favorite fashionista/fashion inspo?

I always find myself circling back to Kendall Jenner’s streetwear styles. I feel like they work for any time of year and are classic in a way that works regardless of event. I also feel inspired by Gracie Abrams, especially her recent tour outfits.

I love Gracie. The capri comeback: yes or no?

No, I'm definitely not a fan.

I think that very specific capris can work in very specific situations. What is a Skylar Helfman staple piece?

Does coffee count? I feel like if there's one thing I always have it’s coffee… or maybe my bracelets. I never go anywhere without these two chain bracelets. I’ve worn them everyday for the last few years, they’re my favorite.

I love them! Do you believe different cities have different styles? Which city do you prefer?

For sure. I think each city brings their own aesthetic and that's what makes them their own. I adore London’s style, but I think in practicality I would have to go with New York. I wish we had more of a European style in the United States.

I agree. What is an accessory you wish people would utilize more often?

Oh, I think belts for sure. I feel like they can elevate an outfit so much more than regular clothes can. Top accessory for sure.

High tops or low tops? Knee-high boots or ankle boots? What are your favorite shoes?

Honestly, I’m becoming a big fan of low tops. I just bought two new pairs the other day and I think they’re great. I’m a big fan of Knee-high boots; I think they’re so fun. I’m a big fan of my Ugg slippers, if I'm going to be real here. I am also obsessed with New Balances right now. I feel like they’re making a comeback, which I love.

Tiramisu. I absolutely love it. I mean I love coffee so it kind of makes sense.

I love tiramisu too. Where would your dream home be?

I’d love to have a place in Italy. Florence specifically. Or simply visit -– it's definitely high on my bucket list right now.

That sounds gorgeous. What song do you have on repeat right now?

Vanity Fair by The Ocean Blue -– It's a perfect spring song.

Love it! Thank you, Skylar. NHS, stay tuned for more fashionistas this school year, and DM @hilltoppernhs on Instagram to nominate yourself or a friend as a future fashionista!
