Winter Birthday Ideas

Winter birthdays are frustrating. I have a winter birthday myself, and this year especially, I have struggled with coming up with ways to celebrate with my friends. For one thing, it’s very cold, and oftentimes everything is covered with snow and ice. For another, school in the winter is incredibly busy, packed with midterms, essays, and frequent quizzes, tests, and projects. Plus, if you celebrate December holidays, people are much less willing to buy you another round of presents. For my friends’ summer, spring, and fall birthdays, we usually spend a lot of time outside in the city, in the Seaport or on Newbury Street. But what is there to do for a winter birthday?

Snowport (in December)

The Snowport Holiday Market comes to Boston’s Seaport annually around the holidays, and it’s lots of fun to walk around with friends and family there, shopping and grabbing snacks at the booths. The things you can pick up there are so unique!

Go ice skating

Ice skating is available next to Boston’s Time Out Market, or the Frog Pond. Even for those who don’t know how to skate (like myself), doing it badly is just as fun! Plus, Time Out Market is a great place to eat.

Indoor shopping

If you and your friends enjoy shopping, there’s always the Natick Mall or the Prudential Center, which you don’t even have to step outside for!

Go out for dinner

There are plenty of restaurants available in and around Boston that are great for celebrating birthdays. I would recommend looking up different restaurants to find something perfect for your taste!

Slumber party

There is nothing like staying up all night with your best friends, eating midnight snacks, and in the case of a birthday, having cake! It seems simple, but it’s definitely a lot of fun.

Indoor party

Parties can get a little more complicated when people are dragging in wet boots and coats, but keeping it small and setting up a cozy space can definitely work as a birthday activity!

Movie night

An oldie but goodie! With the perfect snacks and drinks, movie nights are good at home or in theaters. Pair this with a nice dinner, sleepover, or both!

Potluck

Last but not least, a potluck could be so fun! Have all of your friends bring their favorite meals, decorating around the house could be really cute, and the food is almost guaranteed to be amazing!

Winter birthdays don’t have to be lame, provided that in the midst of everything you can find the time to celebrate. There are lots of options if you think about it. Winter is hard to get through, but birthdays make it so much better. Happy birthday to the Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces of NHS!
