The Constitution

Constitution of the student council

The 42nd meeting of the Board of Governors, held on 30th September, 2019 approved the the Constitution of the Student Council. The entire process began on 15th June 2018, when a faculty committee was appointed to create a constitution for a proposed Student Council. Members of this committee include Argha Bannerjee, Amrita Hazra, Shanti Kalipatnapu, Sunil Mukhi, Suhita Nadkarni, Prabhas Patankar, Sudha Rajamani, Naresh Sharma, and Pushkar Sohoni (Convener). The two student representatives on the committee are Vibishan B. and Sandeep Varkey.

Students were told to present their vision of a Student Council, and accordingly, on 26th July 2018, a reminder was sent to the students to remind them of a large town-hall meeting where they would present their draft constitution. On 6th August 2018, students presented their proposals for a constitution of the Student Council in an open meeting. There was consensus amongst the students regarding what changes were required. This was followed by several months in which the draft constitution was discussed with various committees and faculty members who suggested amendments and changes.

This present draft was prepared in February 2019 by after months of discussions with other students and faculty members. In March and April 2019, it was presented to the Committee for Student Affairs (COSA), and the Committee of Deans and Faculty Chairs (DFC); various other faculty members also deliberated upon it and all suggestions were considered and the changes have been incorporated in the draft constitution.

We urge everyone to give the Constitution a read as it forms the fundamental tenets on which the Student Council functions. Here is the Official Memorandum for the same.

For a summarized reading of the Constitution, the council's duties and responsibilities, we suggest the two articles written by Abilash Kumar (BS-MS class of 2022) as part of Kalpa's Ganatantra Series.
