Yoga
My paternal grandparents are well known yoga instructors in Switzerland, thus my family's love for yoga has been rooted down for generations now. But here are some moments yoga has inspired me...
When I was in deep depression and grieving my mother's passing, I turned to yoga because it made me feel alive. As unstable as I felt without her, practicing balancing poses led to a more stable and positive mental status. I remember sitting down in child pose as my yoga instructor said “yoga is a time to disconnect from our busy lives and release the external stressor to focus on your breath and your goals. And it’s ok if you aren’t there yet, it takes time. But we all have passion.” I then learned she was an occupational therapist. Her yoga class had been more restorative and gave my life more meaning than four years of therapy. In that particular moment, I knew I wanted a career in the medical field that incorporated being active and engaging people in meaningful activities to find purpose, just as yoga does for me.
I have also taught yoga classes casually to peers and Karen McCarthy asked me to teach her Psycho-social Lab for 30 minutes April 18th, 2018.
April 2019, some Student Health Center Committee Members tabled one lunch period in petitioning signatures for a safe space to cultivate well being and occupational balance on campus. We got over 100 signatures and were provided with a room in the library by May 2019. Fall of 2019, we gathered furniture, plants, and room designs to promote relaxing.
