"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery." Mark Van Doren
I have had the pleasure of being a student teacher at Loma Verde Elementary School in Novato, CA during the fall of 2020. It is a vibrant community of diverse learners. Even remotely, the warmth, rigor, and culture of this exceptional school shines through.
I am also being mentored by Jennifer Weltzien of the Cove Elementary School in Corte Madera, CA in a regular substitute position. I get the opportunity to be the lead teacher both in person and online delivering my created lessons and hers as well.
"ICS students are bilingual, biliterate, culturally competent, and academically successful. They have the linguistic, social emotional, and critical thinking skills to build alliances within and beyond our community and work to create an equitable and just world."
"It's show time folks!" Every day that I teach virtually at International Community School, I plan it with the strengths of virtual classrooms. I prepare my lessons as if I am preparing for a multimedia television performance. Using the UDL principle of multiple means of engagement, my students learn through music, media, video, slides and text. Each learning day is an experience where we leverage technology as an asset instead of a handicap. Our days begin with Vivald's Concert in G as students enter the virtual classroom on Zoom.
I substitute taught at Cove Elementary school almost every day since they first opened in person in October 2020.
