"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
Collaboration: The ability to work productively and equitably while valuing others in diverse educational
settings.
I make math a collaborative, inquiry based time in my classroom--math studio. Similar to how an artist explores different questions and ideas through their medium, mathematicians use the same process to develop deep learning. Math does not have to be a solo, worksheet or application based experience. We are a community of learners that can help each other through discourse.
I love being part of a grade level team as well as a larger school. I learn so much from my colleagues.
Even in online environments, our team of teachers from ICS found ways to connect while making Tom Kha soup over zoom!
I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Destiny Arts in my teaching position at International Community School. They provided the arts education piece for the school and I worked with their lesson plans to integrate what they were teaching into my standard academia. Destiny Arts was already one of my favorite arts organization because of their dedication to social justice and change through the arts. This has been a phenomenal experience to collaborate with their teachers and programming in my own classroom.

When the pandemic threatened to cancel the Cove's Annual Variety Show, I collaborated with the PTO president Kristen Slowe and parent volunteer, Kristine Dell, to keep our beloved transition going. We asked our Cove students to film themselves doing a minute of their talents and upload their work to a google drive. Kristine Dell edited this into a lovely movie presentation. Kristen Slowe coordinated and communicated with families throughout the process. We added a fundraiser with a local restaurant, Perry's to have a takeout meal for families to pre-order and they gave proceeds back to the Cove. My daughter and I emceed the event and made it a "Golden Coyote Awards" theme. We celebrated how students were able to show different talents such as biking and skiing that couldn't normally be seen on our variety show stage. It was a success for all and could not have been done by just one person. It was fun to brainstorm, delegate, and follow through on this engaging night. We have kept our community joyful by being creative and flexible.
It's never too soon to discuss literature, make inferences, and write about your reading. This is Teachers College Units of Study in action.
