Demonstrate your ability to engage students in children’s literature to develop their literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, & speaking)
What is effective, engaging pedagogy in early childhood education?
Activating prior knowledge
Having students write down answers
Perky pace (Anita Archer)
Repetition
Acting out text for vocab
Model what to do and what not to do. Ending with how to do it!
Into, through, and beyond
What do you know about teaching literacy?/How will you actively engage all students in reading, writing, listening, & speaking?
4 components: reading, writing, listening, speaking
Reading:
Alternative passage reading (close reading, whisper to yourself, teacher reading, etc.)
Symbol isolation (arm trick)
If you are done reading, read it again
Notes from Julie Thomas:
Start with vowels
Short vowel a, m, s, t, p, n,
CVC= consonant vowel consonant, e.g. sad, mad, had, dad
Decodables” books written explicitly for beginning readers, using words they can sound out.
Writing:
Label things (ie pictures)
Letting kids figure out how to sound out/spell
Listening:
Cloze reading- teacher reads & when they stop, students continue reading where teacher left off
Teach bigger vocab words before reading & having students repeat the words
Speaking:
Group discussion
Turn and talk
“Thinking out loud” (“When I see the cover of the book, I see…”)
Verbal syllable isolation
What do you know about selecting high-quality books to teach literacy?
Select books at all different reading levels
Reading books about characters feelings and actions develops children's- abilities to understand and appreciate how others feel
Good teaching books have a duet of pictures and texts
Make predictions about the book from the cover
Develop visual literacy by thinking aloud (saying “I see this”)
How will you integrate other curricular areas into literacy development? (e.g., art, science, math, social studies)
Art:
Drawing pictures and labeling them
After students read a passage, have them draw about what they read or something that the text reminds them of.
Science/ Social Studies:
Reading books about lesson topics
Activate prior knowledge by asking students what they wonder? What they know about it already? What they want to learn about certain topics?
Bring in food from specific learned culture
Videos from person of the learned culture to talk about their upbringing
Math
Learning how to spell/recognize numbers
IE: 4- four
How will you ensure that all students’ cultures, languages, & learning needs are honored?
-Language/ELL:
-providing material in their own language
-When showing videos, put captions in their own language.
- Cultures:
-celebrate/learn about non traditional holidays
-by doing readings about certain cultural celebrations
-honor certain dietary restrictions
-SPED:
-Hands on manipulative letter recognition puzzles
-flexible seating
-fidget toys
-1:1 instruction
