Intro to Studio Art

Hand Drawing

I drew my hand holding a tool using different values of pencil. I chose a glue gun because I thought that it would look cool. In this lesson I learned how to add value and where to put shadows. I do like how it turned out, but there are some things I don't like. I don't like how my fingers look so fat, and I feel like the whole drawing could look a lot smoother overall. Other than that I do like this drawing and I learned a lot from this process. One thing I like is how I did the sleeve, the eraser tool was fun. I really enjoyed drawing this and hope to improve in the future.

Insect Painting

I painted an insect using acrylic paint. I chose a bee because I think they are cute. Some things that were a challenge were the glare on the shiny part of its body, the fuzzy part, the flower, and trying to get the wings to look transparent. Although the fuzzy part was a challenge, it was one of my favorite parts to do. Same with the flower. I'm very happy with how it all turned out and I discovered that I like painting more than drawing. I can't wait to see how I can improve at painting and this was a fun process.

Clay Jar

As a class we made clay jars and I chose to do a cactus. I really like plants but the one plant I can't keep alive is a cactus, so I decided to make a fake cactus because I can't kill it. A challenge for me was the flower, it kept falling off and I couldn't get it to look smooth. Another challenge I had is that I scooped out too much clay from the top so it caused it to crack. I enjoyed glazing it and seeing how the colors turned out. Throughout this process I realized that I enjoy using clay.

Clay Bowl

In art we made clay bowls out of coils. It was hard getting everything to fit the way I wanted it to, and that led to a lack of symmetry. I had to add 3 pillars instead of 2. One thing I liked doing was the glaze. I chose a bright orange because it's very fresh and it reminds me of summer. It's also just very fun. Doing the glaze was fun because the bowl is so big and I just liked being able to slap glaze on it. This bowl was fun to make but also difficult sometimes. I am happy with the finished product.

Watercolor Painting

We worked on watercolor for a while. I enjoyed the tracing the lines off of the picture. I had to freehand some of it. I also liked doing the dots for shading. One thing that was difficult for me was the colors going places I didn't want them to. Another hard thing was knowing when to stop, it got a little darker than I initially wanted it to be. This project had ups and downs but I'd say there were more ups and I enjoy watercolor now. I'm happy with my finished product.

Bird Print

For my bird print I chose a hummingbird. We had to choose a photo we liked, and transfer it onto a rubber block. Then darken it with a marker. Then we carved out the parts that weren't marker. I enjoyed the carving process. It was very satisfying to see the pieces of rubber come away from the marked parts. I do wish I had left more space between the back wing and the head, because it's hard to understand what's happening. After it was carved we rolled ink onto the block and stamped it on paper. It was hard to know how much ink to use but it was fun getting creative with different colored paper and inks. Overall I am happy with my final project and it was fun to do.

Spot the Differences

During this process I learned that I do not like photo shop. It is very frustrating and way too technical for me. I don't like being on the chrome book more than I have to. One thing I did like was that I chose an easy photo to alter with a lot of things in it. Overall this project taught me that I need to never get a job in anything involving photo editing. The videos were helpful to watch and I think that the project was set up good, I just didn't like it.

Box

This box was frustrating as well. I was sick and tired of people saying how easy it is every day. I would come to school and just feel like I'm not good enough or I'm not good at art because of the people I was surrounded with. I think that if our tables could've been more accepting with failure, it would've been better and less stressful overall. I felt very stressed to get everything right and if I didn't have that pressure I could've done a lot better. I had to switch the paper a lot because I kept messing up, so I don't love the paper choice but that's okay. I like how the metal part turned out. I'm just glad to be done with it. I wish that my last project this year could've been better and I wish I had a better time, but I'm glad I did art this year and how much I've grown from it.
