Learning Chinese can be a challenging and long-term endeavor, often benefiting greatly from a teacher's guidance. However, picking up small, practical vocabulary can significantly aid your communication and understanding, even early in your learning journey. In this section, you’ll learn some essential words for directions and places—useful tools for navigating in everyday situations. Sports start to resume in the spring, so it should be helpful to know some common ones.

运动 = dì fang/places

打 - Dǎ/hit

打羽毛球 = Dǎ yǔmáoqiú/ to play badminton

打网球 = Dǎ wǎngqiú/to play  tennis

打篮球 = Dǎ lánqiú/ to play basketball

打乒乓球 = Dǎ pīngpāng qiú/to play ping pong

打棒球= Dǎ bàngqiú/ to play baseball

打橄榄球 = Dǎ gǎnlǎnqiú/to play football

打排球 - Dǎ páiqiú/to play volleyball

练 - Liàn/to practice 

练武术 - Liàn wǔshù/to practice martial arts

练体操 - Liàn tǐcāo/to practice gymnastics

田径 - tiánjìng/track and field 

锻炼 - Duànliàn/to exercise

训练 - Xùnliàn/to train

健身 - Jiànshēn/fitness

踢- Tī/to kick

踢足球 - 踢足球/to play soccer

踢毽子 - Tī jiànzǐ/to play Jianzi

跑 - Pǎo/to run

跑步 - Pǎobù/to run

跳 - Tiào/to jump 

跳水 - Tiàoshuǐ/diving

跳远 - Tiàoyuǎn/long jump

划 - Huà/to mark

划船 - Huáchuán/rowing

划龙舟 - Huà lóngzhōu/dragon boat racing

Notice:

When you are speaking Chinese, there are five different tones. First tone, 妈-mā (mom), like singing "Ahhh". Second tone, 麻-má (hemp), like asking "What?". Third tone, 马-mǎ (horse), like saying "Well..". Forth tone, 骂-mà (to scold), like saying "No!". And the last tone, neutral tone, 吗-ma (a question particle).
