The Lord of the Flies essay was our first paper in Ms. Howell's class. I enjoyed William Golding's novel, and I found it fascinating. But when it came time to write our literary analysis essay, I struggled to create something I was proud of. I didn't build the base I needed to be able to write a strong essay in my first year, and my lack of experience writing showed in the earlier stages of the paper. So I asked for help. I sought help from Ms. Howell and my parents and gained valuable writing knowledge. My most beneficial takeaway was learning how to better structure my essay. Throughout the rest of the writing process, I used all the support I could get and wrote a solid paper. In the end, I was incredibly proud of all my work, and I grew a lot as a writer throughout the process. One of my favorite moments from the entire project was when my conclusion was used as an example for the whole class.
English This Year
While English was my most challenging class, but I still immensely enjoyed it. I am incredibly proud of how I've learned to approach papers and how I can better manage them and my other classwork. While I've improved so much, I didn't become the great writer I want to be, so I've challenged myself to take AP Comp next year as a junior, where I want to take my writing and time management skills to the next level. I also hope to get Ms. Howell as my English teacher again next year, as I've had such a great experience in her class throughout this year.
The 57 Bus
In English this year, I read a book in a small group. That book was called The 57 Bus. The book follows an 18-year-old gender-neutral person named Sasha. Right here in the Bay, three boys lit Sasha’s skirt on fire, leaving them with a horrible burn. During the six weeks, we read this book, my ability to understand characters deeply grew. I’m incredibly proud of my work on the final reading guide. Reading this book influenced my work for the rest of the school year. More complex writing skills gave me more understanding of my skills at the time and where I needed improvement. Reading The 57 Bus didn’t only help with my writing skills and gave me more of a perception of the lives of LGBTQ+ people. Learning more about the injustice so many people experience also profoundly impacted me.
I also enjoyed listening to others speak during our Socratic seminar. I found it interesting to hear about others’ books, their opinion on mine, and what they found fascinating in theirs.
My Overall Impressions of The 57 Bus
(From Final Reading Guide)
English was hard for me this year. It wasn't easy because we did numerous projects that required speaking in front of the class. We presented projects on poetry, current events, and a project on a topic related to climate justice. Speaking in front of people - even in small groups - has always been challenging. While I'm still scared to talk in front of others, I've gained so much confidence doing so. In all my classes this year, I grew the most in writing and speaking due to my English Class. Ms.Goldberg played a massive role in my development this year by recognizing the effort I'd been putting in and keeping me motivated to do my best. Ms.Goldberg has also been my favorite English teacher I've ever had. She cares and always wants to know what is happening in your life. Her kindness and how she teaches made me enjoy English so much more this year compared to English in middle school, and I'm grateful I had her as a teacher.
