In this year (Year 8) We will be designing a table which we will be getting to take home with us and use however we want.
Design and manufacture a side table that is finished to a high quality. The finish qualityof the table should be such that it is suitable to be auctioned at an end of term show.
The side table must be designed for a specific place (building or room) and match the context that it is to be used in. I must define the design context myself and then research the identified design context.
I should use my research to create a suitable inspiration board to help me generate your ideas. I must present a range of ideas and identify one to manufacture. I must plan appropriately to manufacture my idea and aim to achieve the highest quality outcome in my product.
Restrictions are set to help solve the design problem in a way that is suitable for the context and to ensure a project can be completed to the desired standard with set perameters.
The following design restrictions apply for this project:
The table can be no bigger that 350mm x 350mm or equivelent diameter
The table must combine mostly wood in a geometric pattern of wood and utilise a filler.
The filler must be no more than 5% of the total volume of the table.
You must design your table to show off the beautiful aesthetic quality of the wood you have chosen
Each piece of the table must be no smaller than 20mm in width unless it is an endpiece near the edge of the table that completes the pattern
You must design your table to combine simple geometric shapes with straight edges that can be combined to make more complex shapes. No organic shapes.
Where and Why? : The side table will be for me and it will be put into my bedroom where I will put stuff on it since i'm a very forgetful person if I have this table I can just get all my valuables and things I need from there.
Goals: I want it to look really aesthetic and pretty but I also want it to be efficient, ethical and easy to use. I hope to be able to complete in within the duration of the time I have so I will have to try to work quickly and efficiently if I want it to look aesthetic and also be efficient at the same time.
Enviroment: Sadly the wood (Hardwood) that we are using will affect the enviroment and it is also expensive, but for good reason since they are known for their hardness (hence their name) and durability.
Because of their reputation for hardness and durability, hardwoods are the perfect material to employ in goods that must survive a lot of wear and tear. They can last for many years since they are also resistant to insects and rot.
Hardwoods, which come from coniferous trees, can be than softwoods because of their durability and beauty. However, the quality and durability of the final product make the greater expense justifiable.
Hardwoods are trees that shed their leaves in the winter. These trees are classified as deciduous trees.
Hardwoods can be found in many different things, such as flooring, furniture, cutting boards, and musical instruments. Additionally, they are frequently used for ornamental pieces like picture frames and carvings.
Hardwoods can be a sustainable option for product manufacturing when sourced ethically. A lot of hardwoods are produced in managed forests, where harvested trees are replaced by new ones. However, it's crucial to remember that deciduous trees take a very long time to grow on average, 100 years.
The distinctive grain patterns of hardwoods are one of the elements that contribute to their beauty. Wood fibre growth produces these patterns, which can be wavy and uneven or straight and homogeneous.
IIOrganic Patterns: Organic patterns are inspired by shapes and forms found in the natural world. They are often free-flowing, irregular, and asymmetrical, resembling things like plants, animals, and other natural elements. These patterns feel more fluid and spontaneous, lacking strict rules or structure, which gives them a more natural and dynamic appearance.
Geometric Patterns : Geometric patterns are made up of precise, repeating shapes such as lines, circles, triangles, squares, and polygons. These patterns follow a logical order, often based on mathematical principles. They tend to be symmetrical and predictable, creating a sense of harmony and structure.
I have decided on using minimalism and mosaic patterns. I chose mosaic patterns because I believe they are really pretty and their designs are very intricate the way you have to construct an art piece using multi-coloured tiles. For minimalism I thought that minimalism was cool the way there were only a few simple shapes which I think are a contrast to mosaic which like I said was intricate.
This is my pattern poster, which i decided to use the minimalism and mosaic patterns because I think they're really cool. For the poster first I would draw the shapes that I wanted and then I would find a picture. I would then mask it so the picture didn't go infront of the lines.
Today we learnt about table designs and all the procreate drawing assist tools. Like how the symetry tool works and how other ones work. The minimum amount of designs we were supposed to do was 6 so I did 6 but I might do more.
These are my two favourite designs I like them because I feel like theyre really unique and they're not like the other designs and I feel like I really like how they turned out using the tools on procreate.
For this one I also really like it cause of all the dashes but I think that I may need to perfect it a bit more because some of the lines are not finished properly so I may need to adjust it and add a bit more.
The first tool is called symmetry. I think it's really useful to draw cool shapes since it makes them look equal and I really like it as there is so many kinds of symmetry.
As you can see I have picked the radial symmetry because I personally think in my opinion that the radial symmetry is the best but the other ones are still good but I just like the radial one the most and as you can see you can adjust the settings.
There are also guides like the 2D grid which makes squares appear and if you turn on drawing assist you will be able to draw on the lines but if you turn it on that means you will be only able to go horizontally and vertically and not diagonally but you can turn it off.
For the grid size we can only make it 20mm or more because the design restrictions says that it should be 20mm or more and we have to follow them and you can see that there are also adjustments for the opacity and thickness which I think is very helpful to use.
What is Plywood?
A composite material called plywood is created by stacking and adhering thin wood veneer "plies" together. This engineered wood belongs to the family of manufactured boards, which also includes particle board (also known as chipboard), plywood, orientated strand board (OSB), and medium-density fibreboard (MDF).
For our design plywood is very useful because it can naturally withstand lots of stress and full weather exposure so it is able to withstand harsh weathers.
This is my design which I used the triangular guide to create an assortment of different triangles to create my table design which I think is really, but personally this isn't one of my favourites but I still really like it.
This is what it looks like with the triangular guide showing how I used the guide and the lines but you can see that I still need to polish some edges of my design as it still looks a bit messy.
This is another one of my design which I really like but I feel like it's a bit complicated due to the amount of shapes it has so I'm not sure if I can actually use it since like I said it looks complicated and it has a very intricate design.
It is also one of my longest designs to create as it took a very long time to complete with how much shapes and details there are, but even though it took a long time I really liked the end result because I think it looks really cool.
For this design I wanted to do something kind of like crosses and straight lines so I used the symmetry tool and slowly started to construct lines that crossed over eachother but I felt like it was a bit messy so I didn't add colour to it as it wasn't my favourite.
I tried to add an assortment of shapes to this one like as you can see there are ; Triangles, rectangles, squares and more polygons and some shaped that are not polygons as they aren't closed but you can see that none of the shapes are curved and they are all straight lines.
To make an accurae wood colour palette I would have to actually find a picture of wood then insert it into the new palette: from photos button.
I searched up a picture of wood and after some scrolling to find one I liked, I found one with the colours that I liked so I secided to choose it and added it to my photos
Then I would insert that Image into procreate and it would create a palette with the wood colours for me and then I could just colour drop it into my designs.
This is a palette of wood colours which I will be using in my design so I searched it to find wood palettes to use for my design on procreate, so I could colour my design.
This is my designs but I decided to take inspiration from another person's website who decided to do an image carousel with there actual design but then with a black and white picture f the design next to it and I decided to do that to my 2 favourite designs
I think that this is my favorite one as 1. I really like how the colour goes from dark to light and 2. I really like that it's kind of like a mosaic with bits and pieces fitting one another like a jigsaw puzzle which makes me think it is very satisfying to look like
In onshape these are all the tools that I can use but the one that I mostly use is the straight line one as most of my design conisists of straight lines so the tools are really useful to use,but like I said this time I usually used the straight line tool but in other projects that I did I usually used the cury tools as most of my designs were very complex but this time I decided to do something a bit simpler.
When I wanted to start sketching I had to click on the planes that I wanted to draw on and the select the things that I wanted to use and then I would slowly start sketching out my design
I thought this was a really useful tool to use as using this I could look at my design fom any perspective so I could see if it looks good or if I need to change or edit anything in my design.
The reason I used this tool was basically to insert the image of my design onto it and start tracing my design instead of just going by memory as doing that I might make more mistakes so if I actually traced it,it would me easier and way more efficient.
So this is what my design looks like when I finished and as you might be able to see there are still some tines that look a bit weird, and lines that I need to adjust so I decided to put this image to see the before and after so you could see how I improved it.
This is what it looks like without my reference and how it looks like after I have completed the finishing touches and I really like how it looks, and how it appears kind of like a mosaic with little bits and pieces fitting together perfectly, just like how I wanted it to look and now for the final touch is to colour it.
When I finally coloured it I was really happy because I really like how its liike a gradual colouring, like at first its very dark but then slowly it becomes lighter and ligher kind of like a shadows and highlights so basically this is my finished result and now I just need to start with the actual manufacturing and I think i'll like how it turns out.
This is a side view,of my table after I finally figured out how to import the table legs onto my design and then figured out how to put them on to eachother and then finished my design and also coloured it, at first I tried checking the colour of the table legs trying different but I figured that the basic blue colour was the most perfect one for my design.
These are all the parts of my design and as you can see theres a lot of parts, and the reason for that is because I wanted my design to be like a mosaic with tiny bits and pieces all fitting together so I had to use lots of pieces.
I used a paper cutter to trim the design layout because I wanted to make sure that all my measurements were correct and accurate before moving on to the next step of making the table. I had to make sure the cutting was perfect because if I didn't make it correctly it would make the 2 pieces of the A3 paper fit.
I had to cut all four of the papers, and some of it weren't perfect but i wasnt that bad but most of them were alright and could fit together.
I then had to make sure to fit the pieces together and had to make sure that they actually fit and that they could go togther correctly and if it was the wrong side.
I used masking tape to temporarily hold the pieces in place before assembling because I needed to make sure that everything stayed aligned while I made any last-minute adjustments. The tape helped stabilize the design and prevented the parts from shifting or moving.
To start actually cutting the pieces of wood to make it match the template, I needed to start cutting the pieces of paper and gluing them onto the wood so that I can later cut the wood and then start fitting it together.
This is what it looks like when I started to piece them together, and since I wantd it to look like a mosaic thr peices should fit with eachother easily like a jigsaw puzzle.
These are the pieces, starting to come together as I cut them and piece them together, my design is somewhat difficult as I have lots of bits and pieces tht U need to cut out and then piece all together so it will take quite a while for me to finish them.
This is my work aftet I filled it and started to sand it
