The Holy Black Friday
Beliefs
The Holy Black Friday religion stems back to when the original founders would camp out when the utopia was in the process of being built, and Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) was the day the utopia officially became a nation.
No deity is worshiped in this religion, as the religion is more of a belief system that is focused on continually improving one’s life through decluttering things that are “out of season”. When the founders of Macy’s Clearance Section drew up ideas for the nation, they looked at other somewhat successful societies, and decided the best way to innovate a society would be to reduce excess “clutter”. In a governmental/societal sense, this would include bigotry, racism, classism, and other similar ideals. The basis of the ideas the founders had is applied to the Black Friday sale as clutter from houses are removed to improve people’s lives.
Rituals and Practices
On the days leading up to Black Friday (November 25th), followers clean out their houses and rid their lives of excessive clutter. They also wear all black on this day because in this society, black is not seen as a mournful color. Black is seen as joyous due to its association with the holy day. On the day of Black Friday, followers rise early to prepare for the opening of the store. It is tradition for eager shoppers to wait outside of the store before they open, then run into the store as fast as they can as the doors open. This tradition stems from the early citizens of the Clearance Sections tendency to camp outside while the society was being built and before infrastructure was completed. The practice of waiting outside alludes to the hardships the founders went through when building this utopia. Now, although the tradition has mellowed out, children and adults alike rejoice in the excitement and anticipation of the door's celebratory opening.
Organization
Although the Holy Black Friday religion is dominant, there are plenty of other religions in the society. Religion rarely comes up as a controversial topic as people focus on their beliefs, and do not disrespect others based on anyone else’s beliefs. These smaller religions tend to be of local cultures that influence how people in one aisle live vs. the next, but they do not compete with each other because all beliefs are accepted, seen as valid, and welcomed. Many cultures continually share their ideas/tech/food, which contributes to the changing and adapting of cultures, keeping the society from becoming stagnant and allowing beliefs to grow as people grow.
The oil painting to the left dates back to the first days of the Macy's Clearance Section and the store's first celebrations of Black Friday. It was painted by Elizabeth Macy, the wife of Rowland Hussey Macy, who is the founder of Macy's. Today, the painting hangs in the Clearance Section over the Store Manager's desk.
