If you can't make a meeting, our presentations, notes, and any other updates will be uploaded here after each meeting. Most meetings will include time to get to know other club members, watching videos and viewing other thought-provoking resources, learning together, discussing questions related to the month's theme, taking polls, and getting inspired to implement what we learn into the real world. You can view an archive of all of our monthly meetings below.
Our topic for the month is Introduction to NJC and Systems of Oppression. During this meeting, we outlined the goals for this group and dived into learning about systemic oppression. Our discussions revolved around the poll questions that were asked. The group was able to create a comfortable environment together in which everyone felt that they were able to share freely and openly. Together we learned about how different systems of oppression work together in our society and throughout our institutions. Click through the slideshow to get an introduction to many of the different systems of oppression and feel free to visit our resources page and education page to learn more.
This month's topic was representation vs misrepresentation in the media. This meeting questionned whether all representation of marginalized groups, no matter the accuracy, is ultimately good. We discussed everything from implicit bias to cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. From our polls and mentimeter we focused our discussions around implicit bias that we have seen in our daily lives. Check out the slideshow below in order to stay updated on what we discussed and any information that we shared during this awesome discussion based meeting. We highly suggest watching the thought provoking resource of the day: Peanut Butter and Jelly Rascism.
Our meeting topic for the month was Black History Month. Our meeting featured 5 thought-provoking resources and individual small group discussions to focus on each respectively. We divided into deep questions revolving around the purpose of Black History Month and the contexts in which we learn Black history in our educational models. We learned about some important parts of Black History past and present and what Black History Month means as well as why there is no white history month. Not only can you check out our slideshow below to visit all of our resources and see our thought-provoking discussion questions, but you can also check out the document below which outlines key discussion points from each small group discussion. We encourage even those who were able to participate in this month's meeting to check out this document in order to learn more about what each of the other small groups discussed.
Our meeting topic for the month was Decolonizing the Curriculum. Our meeting featured a 5-minute introduction video where experts explained what critical race theory is, giving us a baseline for our discussion. Afterwards we discussed how an understanding of critical race theory can lead to decolonization and about the debate surrounding critical race theory in schools. We also explored how our learning could be impacted if critical race theory was banned in our school as well as how schools in other states are currently being affected by this. If you were not able to attend, we recommend watching the video (linked inside the slideshow) and considering the discussion questions.
