The Direction
The Direction
How might we empower disengaged youth to
express their emotions through mark making?
Final Direction
1.5m x 2m Collaborative Canvas
The final project direction involves a series of workshops that facilitate the process of expression.
Each workshop will gradually work with younger to older people, to create a layered canvas of
self expression.
Informed by GUT.S, the medium is controlled in all workshops restricted to acrylic paint (plus spray paints for older people).
The rest of the outcome is entirely directed by the participants.
The intention is to compare how the experience of expression changes as we grow up.
The participants range from younger children with learning challenges that are still in school. To older people that went through school with learning challenges and are still on a journey figuring out how to express themselves.
The final layer will be done by an older participant who has been on this long journey and is content with this process of self-expression.
Changes
The form that the final outcome would take changed after the first workshop. The result was a very valuable visualisation of expression as a child.
The next step would have been for older people to layer their own expression over the top of this. Further consideration found more value in creating a comparative piece on the other side of the canvas.
I primed the other side with gesso and white paint to prepare it for the rest of the workshops.
