Having been able to grasp an idea of my character design direction, I began building the visual style for each burnout animation short. This initiation took the form of an initial style frame, which involved developing a frame from one of my storyboards (Idea 3) through vector illustration. The visual aims to be very simplistic and therefore easy to understand when communicating that particular part of burnout. I utilised a paper pulp texture over the top to not only enhance depth, but also relate back to the office/workplace environment. In regards to colour choices, I began by choosing what I thought was appropriate for the object it was being used on, then I began experimenting with other combinations. This turned into an iterative process that involved adjusting the design of the characters and objects.
These style frame iterations for the main visual involved refining awkward looking shapes as well as tangents unpleasant to the eye. There was also considered exploration of colour in search of a combination that successfully provided a punchy but clear contrast. This contrast also aimed to be achieved through the use of aĀ vibrant pink sticky note character rather than a paper one. Colour was modified in attempt to create more engaging colours and ones less dirty looking.
For the text on screen style frames, the iterations mainly consisted of colour and typeface changes. It was found that some typefaces were possibly too condensed and hence made the visual difficult to read. The particular style of certain letters and symbols was also considered between typefaces. Colour was also considered but mainly depends on what suits the main animation.
The strongest iterations that were chosen for the two developed style frames stemmed from its visual communication. Through feedback and my own analysis between each iteration, I found that these two versions exemplified the most effective contrast, suitable colours and overall clarity. This strongest version composed of
the paper character being transformed into a sticky note character instead. An alternative that brought greater contrast and punchiness while still staying relevant to the workplace. The
visual also contained more refined components.
Through utilising the visual style decided through the strongest style frames, the look for each animation was constructed. To keep consistency between each animation, the vibrant use of colour, simplicity in shape and character design style was maintained.
After applying the visual style to each animation in the series,
I created all the assets for each and constructed frames/stills
of how the animations' story progressed.
