• Xin chào, bạn khỏe không? [xin chao, ban huey hong] = How are you?

• Tôi rất khoẻ, còn bạn? [toi zhat huey, con ban] = I'm good, how about you?

• Tôi cũng rất khoẻ! [toi kong zhat huey] = I'm good too!

Let's start with the common-est greeting in Vietnam - "Xin chào". Afterwards, we can then ask "how are you?". 

• "Xin chào" = "hello" 

• "Bạn khỏe không?" [ban huey hong] = "how are you?" 

  • "Bạn" = you 

  • "Khỏe" = strong/fine/healthy/good 

  • "Không" (particle) = near to/at the end of a question to make it a polar (yes OR no) question 

• "Tôi rất khoẻ, còn bạn?" [toi zhat huey, con ban] = "I'm good, how about you?" 

  • "Tôi" = I 

  • "Rất" (intensifier) = very 

  • "Còn bạn" = and you 

• "Tôi cũng rất khoẻ!"  [toi coung zhat huey] = "I'm good too!" 

  • "Cũng" = also OR too 

Next, let's learn how to introduce names and where we're from! 

• "Bạn tên gì?" [Ban ten zi] = "what is your name?" 

  • "Tên" = name 

  • "Gì" (pronoun) = what 

    • NOTE: the interrogative pronoun "gì" denotes a choice from an infinite set of things or people (eg names!) 

• "Tôi tên [Name]" [Toi ten [Name]] =  "my name is [Name]" 

• "Bạn đến từ đâu?" [Ban den tur dau] = "where are you from?" 

  • "Đến" = come/arrive 

  • "từ" (conjunction) = from/since 

  • "Đâu" (pronoun) = where 

• "Tôi đến từ [place]" [Toi den tur [place]] = "I am from [place] 

• Bạn tên gì? [ban ten zi] = What is your name?

• Tôi tên [Name] [toi ten] = My name is [Name]

• Bạn đến từ đâu? [ban den tur dau] = Where are you from?

• Tôi đến từ [Singapore] [toi den tur [Singapore]] = I am from [Singapore]

• "Bạn bao nhiêu tuổi" [ban bao niu toi] = how old are you

• "Tôi [18] tuổi" [toi [moui tam] toi] = I am [18] years old

How old are you? You're probably eighteen right? But our Vietnamese friends may be older/younger than us! 

•  "Bạn bao nhiêu tuổi?" = "how old are you?" 

  • "Bao nhiêu" = how much OR how many 

  • "Tuổi" = age 

• "Tôi [age] tuổi" = "I am [age] years old" 

  • NOTE: "tuổi" can be omitted when answering (ie "tôi [age]")
