In the case of an emergency, which hopefully won't occur, these are some phrases that might help you!
Alternatively, shouting "HELP ME!" might just work too!
In the case of an emergency:
"Cứu tôi với!" = Help me!
"Cứu" = help
NOTE: giúp in "giúp tôi với" also means help, but it is used in NON-emergency situations
"Tôi" = me
"Với" (preposition) = usually means with/to
Hopefully we won't use these BUT just in case!
"Gọi cảnh sát đi!" = "Call the police!"
"Gọi" = call
"Cảnh sát" = police
"Đi" (particle) = indicating an urging/cocommmanding tone
"Đi" is only a particle when used after a verb (eg. "gọi")
Kinda similar to our Singlish "lah", "lor", "meh" which are all indicators of tone (used at the end of a sentence)
"Gọi xe cấp cứu đi!" = "Call the ambulance"
"Xe cấp cứu" = ambulance
It may also be useful to take note of the numbers to call in Vietnam!
113 is the police
114 is the fire department
115 is the ambulance
Can you say these numbers in Vietnamese?
Một trăm mươi ba (113).
Một trăm mươi bốn (114).
Một trăm mươi sáu (115).
But if Vietnamese is too hard (which it probably will be), this might be an especially useful phrase:
"Bạn có nói tiếng Anh không?" = "Do you speak English?"
"Bạn" (pronoun) = GENERIC you
"Có" (prefix) = to do
"Có" is only a prefix that means to do when used before a verb in questions
It is generally used together with không
NOTE: "có" cannot be used as a prefix with "có" (ie there is no "Có Có")
"Có" is ALSO another prefix
When used before verbs (not in questions), it indicates emphasis or intensification
"Nói" (verb) = to speak
"Tiếng Anh" = English
"Không" (particle) = near to/at the end of a question to make it a polar (yes OR no) question
Can you think of any other Vietnamese phrases which use the particle "không"?
Can you think of how to say "I can speak English" in Vietnamese?
Điều này có đúng khong? (Is this correct?).
Tôi có nói tiếng Anh.
