Understanding Your LES and SF-50 (link to original article)
The Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) is a comprehensive statement of your leave and earnings showing your entitlements, deductions, allotments, leave information, tax withholding information, Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), and benefits paid by the government for you.
Processed by the Defense Finance and Accountings Services (DFAS), DoDEA’s service payroll provider, your LES is tailored to you. Generally issued bi-weekly, your LES also includes remarks related to payroll and personnel actions processed during the current pay period.
Your most recent LES can be found on myPay — available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Your LES contains a lot of important information and should be reviewed regularly. To understand the different blocks and sections and what they mean, use this DFAS reference guide that includes detailed descriptions.
If you suspect errors on your LES, it is important to submit an inquiry as soon as possible using the DoDEA Resource Management (RM) Service Desk at https://service.dodea.edu/rmsr.
Your LES has your current pay schedule (block 4) as well as your daily rate (block 5). It is important to check this information for changes if you have submitted for an Academic Salary Lane (ASL) change.
Daily rate may not be the same rate listed ont he salary schedule if you have elected to be paid over 26 pay periods.
You can also find your Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance Program (FEGLI) enrollment code and Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) code under the deductions area.
The code C reflects the amount withheld for Basic life insurance. The code FEGLI OPTNL reflects the amount withheld for Optional life insurance which you have elected. These codes include A, B and/or C to identify the option.
FEHB reflects what you pay for health insurance this per pay period and the year-to-date total. The code refers to the health plan that you have elected. In this example, 104 represents the Blue Cross Blue Shield Standard Self Only plan.
Review the deduction section of your LES.
For more information on your LES, visit the DoDEA page on DFAS’s website, the DoDEA Foreign Area Allowances webpage, and the DFAS Debts and Claims webpage.
The SF-50 is one of the most important pieces of documentation for a federal employee. It is used to verify federal service. It is your written documentation of a personnel action that affects your position or pay. The information on the back of the SF-50 is not all inclusive and does not provide instructions for reviewing all blocks on your SF-50, but it is helpful. Keep an updated copy of your SF-50 with your records because it could be used to make employment, pay, and qualifications decisions about you in the future. You should retain a copy of all SF-50s with your other important documents.
How to find your SF-50 (for current federal employees)
Access your SF-50s using MyBiz located on the Defense Civilian Personnel Data System (DCPDS) Portal; VPN required. Under Key Services, select “SF50 Personnel Actions.” MyBiz is an online system for managing personnel documents. It is the source for all DoD employees, supervisors, and managers to view and update their personal and human resources related information.
Reading your SF-50 to determine if your ASL has been processed
When Academic Salary Lane (ASL) changes are processed, a new SF-50 (Notification of Personnel Action) is generated. The action type will be listed as a Pay Adjustment (blocks 5-A and 5-B) and the Grade or Level (block 18) will change to reflect the new salary pay lane (blocks 20, 20A and 20C). The Remarks section (block 45) will document the new salary pay lane. Visit the DoDEA website to review the salary schedules.
Review the pay adjustment, grade/level, and new salary pay lane of your SF-50.
Review the remarks section of your SF-50.
Review the sample SF-50 for an ASL change for more details.
For questions or corrections regarding your SF-50 Notification of Personnel Action, submit an inquiry to the Civilian Human Resources Agency (CHRA): usarmy.ria.chra-nc.mbx.dodea-recruitment-divis@army.mil.
